Where did that tournament chat come from?

Recommended Posts

I host and run five "paid for" tournaments each week.

One, and only one, has this unexpected chat to tourney as soon as the tourney starts.

It appears to come from me (as host and the only TD present).

It says "Your convention card will default to SAYC if it is not set to something else".

Every player in the tourney gets it.

Where is this chat message coming from? (Certainly not from me.)

It appears on only one of the tourneys which I run - and on every occasion that I run it.

Please help.

(I should say that I copy the tourney from week to week. So if it is some error in the set-up, then that error will also be copied forward.)

Hello,

That is an automatic message. This message appears in all paid tourneys even if we don't write it when we set the tournaments. I find it usefull for players :)

re your "I copy the tourney from week to week" -- have you tried the Tourn Scheduler in the bbo portal ?

As far as I can tell, it's a choice of 2 things. Either it appears in the Welcome section on the first tab of your tournament, or alternatively, if the welcome section is left blank, then possibly BBO automatically adds that message. We always have something in the welcome section, and I've never seen that message.

That one is a setting specific to each organization.

Not only the message says SAYC is default, it also loads the SAYC CC at the table for all partnerships that do not have a convention card.

It depends on the code you use in your tournament settings, in the Type field.

This tournament is run in the UK.

All players are resident in the UK.

Most players use the Acol bidding system and wouldn't understand SAYC if it glowed in the dark.

Very few players, if any, will have a convention card.

Is this message really a good idea? I have never thought of the USA being a "nanny state". How can I circumvent it?

It depends what tournament it is. Send me the code you are using, in a private message, and I will check.

But if it's one of the free unlimited codes to bypass limitations then its a BBO game, and these usually have a universal convention card pre-loaded.

This message came up in our games as well. Everyone just ignored it, including the director.

I'm not so much worried about an undesired message (that I can contradict) as about the lack of desired functionality.

How do I impose a system card of my choice as obligatory or as default for the tournament?

I imagine that many directors want this, in particular for individual tournaments which have little sense otherwise.

We removed the default Sayc CC.

It seemed like a good idea for a catch-all org like pay games ran by independent hosts, but if it turns out it frustrates more than it helps, it's certainly not mandatory to have it there...

The problem is that nobody plays SAYC. Nobody knows how. Even the people who play SAYC. Those who do know, don't want to play it. So what that card says is "we don't have a card, and you'll have to ask what we play."

20 years ago, we knew this. I've quoted this before, but from my .sig file:

"You're told your opponents play SAYC, but all that means is that they can find the letters 'S', 'A', 'Y', and 'C' on their keyboard." - Adam Beneschan

If people would be willing to play it by default, that would be fine. But they won't, because by and large they can't. In the ACBL, it's actually intended as a *punishment* for not having a CC (not that it's ever enforced, nor, honestly, could it legitimately). (okay, officially it is not a punishment, just a rectification that gives them a CC they are expected to be able to play until they do their duty and have their own card filled out and approved. I'm sure that the people hit by this regulation feel it's a punishment.)

Thanks. That will save some confusion.
