You are playing MPs so youdecide to go for the penalty. Partner leads the ♣4 playing 2nds/4ths from length. Your 10 holds the first trick. What now? Guest Jlall
small diamond. DJ or spade could be right here, just a guess.
PMetsch
♥8. I don't want to establish any tricks for declarer, just a passive return. [it looks like declarer might misguess the club position, as he didn't play the jack on the first round.]

luke warm
i don't think a heart is really very passive... i'd also lead a small diamond..

MickyB
Declarer ducking the first trick is interesting...I doubt he will misguess the clubs given the double but they can be attacked just as well from pard's side, so I'll try a diamond. Yes, a spade looks reasonable as well.
Fluffy
if it wasn't a proble I would play ♦7, but since it was suggested already I'll play ♠Q. Doh! suggested also, mmm ♣Q then.
Echognome
[hv=d=s&v=b&n=s8754hq104d532ckj7&w=sak6ha3dq104ca8543&e=sq10h8762dj976cq102&s=sj932hkj95dak8c96]399|300|Scoring: MP(1NT) - X - All Pass[/hv] As you can see, declarer is going to be down anywhere from one to three. The challenge for the defense is to untangle their tricks and those that started with the ♠Q will have the easiest time. Those that return a diamond can at least put declarer to a guess in clubs later. The heart return helps declarer, but again you can put declarer to a club guess. My partner returned the ♣Q, which although I have some sympathy for, it certainly made it the toughest to collect our tricks and we only set the contract one trick.
