Playing a weak 1NT (12-14), would you: a) Open 1NT b) open 1♦ and rebid 1NT after a 1♠ response c) open 1♦ and rebid 2NT after a 2♣ response Many thanks
gordontd
I'm not sure in what way b & c are different - I would expect anyone who chose one of them to choose the other too. I don't think the hand is worth an upgrade, largely due to the SJx.

I think it's close, but your intermediates are below average and that clinches it for me not to upgrade.
LBengtsson
1NT (12-14), 1NT (13-15), 1NT (14-16), NO 1NT (15-17) 1♦ bid
paulg
This looks like a normal weak no trump to me. You are permitted to be upper range or, occasionally, even hold a maximum.
blackshoe
Hm. 14 HCP, -1 for the "dubious doubleton" in spades, +1 for the fifth diamond, +1 for the three honors in the long suit. Looks like 15 starting points. Borderline. Knowing my usual partners, if I show 15-17, they're going to play me for 17, so I guess 1NT it is. :-)
AL78
I'd open 1NT, even though it is a stonking maximum. Did you open 1NT and miss game when partner held the perfect 10 count?
TylerE
1NT.
Evies Dad
1NT.Blocks opponents more than 1D and if you win the contract you have something in all suits that is worth leading up to.
Douglas43
This is love all so 1NT at pairs and NV at teams. As paulg says, you are allowed to be top of the range. I might upgrade it to 1D - [response] - 1NT vulnerable at teams because (a) IMPs rewards bidding thin games and (b) once in a blue moon 1NTX gets into trouble. Would you really sit for 1NTX? (I agree with opening it 1N in general. However, I do know folks who play good11-average14, and I don't think you'd open 1N with that agreement.) Tramticket
I value this as a middle of the road 14. I love the diamond suit but dislike the isolated honours in the other suits. 1NT is such a powerful opening bid, denying bidding space to the opponents. I want quite a bit more to open 1D.

hrothgar
I'd open 1NT Not completely happy about it, but it seems better that the alternatives (plus its more preemptive than 1!D)
thepossum
No expert but its an obvious choice of 1NT or 1D and I wouldnt mind which one was chosen. A bit too much analysis I reckon :) But I think I would probably go for 1NT, just because it clerly defines your point range and as others say is more preemptive etc I would be interested in why people think there needs to be that much debate over the hand. If its a matter of a point either way, I would not regard the risks of missing out much by treating that as 14 pointer. Surely any system with NT trump ranges is never going to be 100% accurate, otherwise where is the fun in the game :)
gordontd
Having found the hand in question.. let's just say that the issue on this hand is NOT what was opened. Indeed so. I think it would have been more productive to ask about responder's actions and hand evaluation.

I'm not that worried about the double aspect, I play 12-14 throughout at IMPs.

thepossum
FYI, I put the hand into QPlus playing Acol with weak NT (12-14) and bidding went 1NT-3S-3NT-6S EDIT For interesting comparison 2/1 with strong NT reached 6S but much more sedately starting with 1D
nudnikbp
Try to open 1NT as often as possible, so 1NT.
