My partner and I would treat this hand differently and we would like the view of the experts.

Playing a weak 1NT (12-14), would you:

a) Open 1NT

b) open 1 and rebid 1NT after a 1 response

c) open 1 and rebid 2NT after a 2 response

Many thanks

I'm not sure in what way b & c are different - I would expect anyone who chose one of them to choose the other too.

I don't think the hand is worth an upgrade, largely due to the SJx.

I agree with B/C being the same. I think it's close, but your intermediates are below average and that clinches it for me not to upgrade.

This is love all so 1NT at pairs and NV at teams. As paulg says, you are allowed to be top of the range.

I might upgrade it to 1D - [response] - 1NT vulnerable at teams because (a) IMPs rewards bidding thin games and (b) once in a blue moon 1NTX gets into trouble.

Would you really sit for 1NTX?

(I agree with opening it 1N in general. However, I do know folks who play good11-average14, and I don't think you'd open 1N with that agreement.)

No expert but its an obvious choice of 1NT or 1D and I wouldnt mind which one was chosen. A bit too much analysis I reckon :)

But I think I would probably go for 1NT, just because it clerly defines your point range and as others say is more preemptive etc

I would be interested in why people think there needs to be that much debate over the hand. If its a matter of a point either way, I would not regard the risks of missing out much by treating that as 14 pointer. Surely any system with NT trump ranges is never going to be 100% accurate, otherwise where is the fun in the game :)

Probably not, but partner might rescue me into a major before I can run to 2D. I'm not that worried about the double aspect, I play 12-14 throughout at IMPs.

Matter of style. IMO, many experts upgrade, opening 1 and rebidding 1NT.

Whatever they declare, their effective range is 11.5-13.5 [/hv]
