Consider the following auctions. What do you think partner has in each of them and what is your call?

(1)

(P) - P - (1) - X

(XX) - 2 - (P) - P

(X) - XX - (P) - ?

(2)

(P) - P - (1) - X

(XX) - 2 - (X) - P

(P) - XX - (P) - ?

(3)

(P) - P - (1) - X

(XX) - 2 - (P) - 3

(X) - XX - (P) - ?

(4)

(P) - P - (1) - X

(XX) - 2 - (X) - 3

(X) - XX - (P) - ?

1) business. This is silly, but if pard had a red 2 suiter he would have passed the XX then bid 2D. I should have raised to 3C the first time, which is why bidding 2C with a red 2 suiter is silly. That being siad, at the table I would pull because I know whats really going on.

2) same.

3) same.

4) you get the point.

Shrug. If these are torture bids, then why bother posting to so say that you aren't going to post? :)

Partner was myself getting too creative in auction 3 with the guessed at (by Justin):

I have since been convinced to pass the redouble and wait for partner to remove himself correcting 2 to 2.

I was more used to bidding that after (1NT) - X - (P) - ? or 1NT - (X) - ?. But those are quite different auctions.

They say that bridge is a game of experience and I certainly gained some on this hand.

Agreed. But some auctions don't make much sense UNTIL you make sense of them. See above in regards to pulling from NT. If you bid 2 as natural and weak (since you are not standing the double), then redouble only makes sense for rescue and only if you do not have clubs at all.

Perhaps there is some argument that with one you have club tolerance and in the other sequence you do not?

Since in the latter you are making partner give preference potentially a level higher. It all comes down to what you expect from partner and what your agreements are. But if we are not willing to explore, then we are not willing to be enlightened!

Ok.. so here's what I think: the most logical meaning for pard's redoubles is SOS. He has tried to psyche opps out of a club fit and is now asking for you to rescue him.

Of course, if pard isn't a 'joker' kind of person, then I wouldn't know what to do.. lol.

Hey!

I thought the auction 1NT- 3NT- 5NT asks partner to bid 7 if he/she has 2 of the top 3 NTs!
