What is North showing in your system? 2D would typically be a maximum passed hand, so North is about a king light.

 

South's normal bid would be 3D, but I might pass if partner bids 2D on hands like these.

Partner's 2♦ is an overbid. Now, assuming 2/1 I rate

1. 2N = NAT. 12-14. Although partner won't expect a singleton ♣.

2. Pass = NAT. Timid but a plus score.

3. 2♥ = NAT Waiting. Permissible with a 5-card suit -- but you'd prefer better quality.

4. 3♦ = NAT. Most partners will expect 4-card support and a better hand.

5. 2♠ = REV. Promises a much better hand (unless you have an unusual agreement). Partner won't have 4♠ unless he is willing to introduce them, himself, later

What sort of range do you expect from partner, and how many diamonds? There are hands where AKxxx of diamonds offer reasonable play for game, so pass seems conservative. Similarly, why do you think 3D shows a better hand and more diamonds?

On reflection, I think sfi is right and have promoted 2N to top spot in my previous post. I learnt 2/1 after starting to play on BBO, so I accept that I'm a novice but expert partners tell me that a minor raise shows 4 cards and extra values. I suppose it might be different opposite a passed hand.

My question about range and number of diamonds was not loaded - it really does depend on agreements.

 

For instance, I would expect 5+ diamonds in any partnership where I get a say. All balanced hands without support would bid 1S or 1NT, which means 2D can show a real suit. For others, you might have 10-11 count with four diamonds and want to show the maximum pass right away.

 

Then there is the question of raising, which is hugely style-dependent. The way you're suggesting is not unreasonable, but it then puts a lot of strain on either 2H or 2NT (one of them has to be your default - it looks like you're suggesting 2H). I'm more used to showing the fit, or a sixth heart, immediately, which can cause problems sorting out range.

 

So maybe not quite a straightforward question in the end.
