What is 2NT?

  1. 1. 2NT over 1H means

    • 3-4 hearts and game
    • Something else entirely
    • Invitation to 3NT

Here's some music to listen to while you ponder it. It's the Kinks: Lola.

Normally when I play robot tournaments I check the bidding carefully. What do you make of this?

The definite answer care of the maestro, Larry Cohen, reads:

Most tournament players use "JACOBY 2NT" in conjunction with their 5-card major system. After an opening of 1-MAJ, a jump to 2NT is conventional. It promises a GF hand and at least 4-card support. This convention should not be used by a passed hand and should not be used if there is interference by the opponents.

I guess GIB agrees with him :)

This still doesn't mean that showing 11 HCP wth a balanced hand is a good idea

After reading the explanation of GIB's passed-hand 2N reply, you might pass. Or you might raise to 3NT (as on the left).

3N is a reasonable contract but GIB tells us that a pointy suit lead defeats it. (because of the 4-2 break).

Many partnerships who agree Drury, and fit-jumps by a passed hand, leave 2N as undefined.

Gib is sensible to ascribe some meaning to it -- rather than none.

IMO it should show a 4-card raise with a void. [/hv]

I don't understand this. If you're playing with a robot you just click on the bid and it will tell you what it means.

I can't vote on this because I don't know what the robot says,

I agree with what Larry Cohen says. Now, North is a passed hand, so it would not be game forcing. I would play it as 10-12 hcp, balanced.

Does Larry Cohon really recommend playing 2NT as natural, here?

It seems incompatible with his aggresive style. We could easily be too high in 2NT opposite a 3rd seat opening.

Of course, 2NT by a passed hand can't be Jacoby - you can't have a GF as a passed hand, unless you have shortness, in which case you can splinter. But that doesn't mean that it has to be natural. You could play it as a minisplinter, or maybe a both minors.

There are also some who use Drury with 3-4 card support and 2NT with 5-card support.
