The side 4 card major does not hase me, but that in addition to the D void and the posession of the KJ of S give this hand far too many flaws. I don't really wanna find a 4-4♥ fit if there is one there. 5-4 might be another hsitory, but partner wouldl have 2 honnors in the suit andmight bid it by himself. Obvious 3♣ to me. Winstonm Posted June 3, 2005 Report Share Posted June 3, 2005 Oddly, I had a similar hand come up tonight. Pard opened 2H in first seat, vul. vs. nv, and RHO overcalled 3C. I held AKQ42, 2, QJ5, K643 - what do you do? Pard's hand was: 10863, KJ10864, A93, void. We were on for 6S as everything behaved as it should - alas, we did not get there, LoL. Opposite xx, QJ108xx, K1082, x, we might as well defend 3C as to stretch for 3H. In my view, when a hand is playable in two suits, the void is the problem, as with a fit for either suit the hand grows enormously in value and you can never "catch up" in the bidding after the weakness announcing preempt. In the hand my partner held, take away one of those little spades and turn it into a club and the hand might easily go down in 4S with either a 4-1 break or a diamond ruff. Antoine Fourrière Posted June 3, 2005 Report Share Posted June 3, 2005 I would certainly open this hand with some number of clubs, perhaps a Precision/Polish 2♣ if I have that bid in my bag (I'm not sure it would be superior here), but certainly a natural 3♣ or 4♣ otherwise, although I would prefer a flatter hand for 3♣ and a weaker hand for 4♣. Hearts will play better than clubs only if partner has five of them, and if it is clearly your hand, so I think that you should forget about both the void and the four-card heart fit. (If I had four spades, I would feel more at risk, but a heart fit increases the chances they have a spade fit, so it isn't really the same situation that Winstonm's hand, which I would nevertheless open 2♥, because the hearts are good.) I do not like Pass at all. The call is as artificial as a strong 1♣ and strong 2♣, and seems misguided when you have something useful to say. I view passing as refusing to take the blame for a possible accident. 1♣ is somewhat better, but also doesn't do justice to this hand.
