Partnership desk

Any qualified BBO director should know how to do this by reading the manual they are given.

But if the director brings up the Substitute option then you see the available substitutes.

As far as I know, directors cannot see the travellers during the event although BBO might be providing additional information to virtual club TDs. But i thought a TD was never meant to consult the traveller when making a decision/ruling so it is not very important. I don't miss not having the travellers for the tournaments I run.

I'm not so sure about using for a ruling. One of the things you're supposed to do in some situations is poll players of a similar level. Having a full record of bidding and play can serve as a good way to get this information. As a simple example, West opens 1NT and then says "oh, we're playing 14-16". East now invites game on an indifferent 9 count. West of course accepts holding 17 points. Rather than polling players, I can start by looking for any tables who opened a 14-16 NT and see what their partner did. The current interface does not make this easy.

I certainly need to consult it when adjusting the score. For instance, if the table runs out of time just after they bid to 4H, I have to take a look. Let's say 4H makes 10 or 11 tricks, what score do I give? If the field is there, I might simply give an average. If they are the only pair to bid it, they deserve a top despite no cards being played. If I have to assign a weighted score, I need to do it outside BBO (which is fine for me, but not for everyone). But I still need to know what to weight it against, and its easier to use the free time during the session to do most of the calculations. If I'm using BBO only, I need to find a suitable score that approximates whatever ruling I would like to make, and then I really need to know what other tables have done.

No, the Substitutes option does’t work for us. If our host or single players sign up to that, they are bombarded by requests from other random tournaments. I have to log on separately with my personal account in order to view the partnership desk. This is annoying, and it is something that the director should be able to see.

I did not say anything about consulting the travellers when making a ruling. But it is useful to have access, if only for the post-tournament Zoom discussion.

Also, when you have to adjust the score it would be nice to have a drop-down menu with the players like there is with the contracts.

Sorry, I slightly misunderstood.

The Partnership Desk is only available before the tournament starts. Those who do not find partners are not automatically assigned as substitutes for the particular tournament.

A few years ago BBO decided to have one common pool of substitutes for all tournaments and team matches. Previously they'd had a substitute pool for each specific event but this became unmanageable for a large number of users who were happy to be a sub for any event, since the increasing number of tournaments and matches meant it was unrealistic to sign up for more than a few.

So BBO responded user requests to create a common pool. Perhaps it might be appropriate to have a more sophisticated solution now: a common pool and a private pool for each event or each club.

But the current solution is popular with a large number of users.

If you have a non-playing director then they cannot see the travellers directly within BBO after the game, but they can look at all the travellers on the web through links provided by BBO. Just bring up the results in BBO from the Director tab and use the expand option which will bring up the results on the web browser.

I still disagree about the need to use the travellers for adjustments. Unlike real life, you can track the auction accurately and the play to the final card played and it is a lot easier to predict the final result. Not always easy, but easier.

This does seem to be the case ... Substitutes button from the table list of a running tournament has the message "I am willing to be a substitute in this tournament". From the list of running tournaments; this is replaced by any.

I haven't tried this ... but looks like there is a general (substitutes) pool and one for each tourney.

I see you are right, there is a general pool and a specific pool for tournaments but not for team matches. I presume that for team matches it uses the general pool, since I cannot see how to register as a sub for a specific team match.

I don't see a way either. The list of running team matches does show who is host so you could send them a private chat. No general pool though. I do think that you are much less likely to want a random substitute for a team match so don't see this as a problem.

Of course they are not automatically assigned. It is up to them, but without seeing the partnership desk I cannot even discover who the host is.

I will try later to get the travellers from the tournament I directed last night and see if this works.

Disagree with whom?
