Cyberyeti
Is this actually the west hand ? or did west pass and N bid 1♠ ? Assuming one of those, I'm happy with 2♥ and pass, and wouldn't criticise partner for either, with a nice heart suit I might bid but opps will probably play spades so I don't need to tell myself to lead one. Vulnerability just leans me towards pass, just possible this will end the auction for -200/500 with nothing on for the opps.
apollo1201
I might go for 800 sometimes but 5 nice H and an opening hand is an okay overcall. This one is easier than the other.
mikeh
Style counts. In my current partnerships, we open all balanced 11 counts, we we have slightly different inference as to partner’s hand than do most. Game is very unlikely opposite a passed hand. We have a minimum in hcp,for a red v white overcall, and short hearts. Make one of my minor spots a heart, and 2H would be clear, and probably unanimous. OTOH, we have the 108 in hearts, and we are very likely to get a spade lead. Plus, if LHO is going to be declaring,we’d like a heart lead, and we’re 2=5=2=4 not 2=5=3=3 This is borderline but I think bidding is ‘normal’. If playing a weak team, I pass since I don’t expect to lose a game swing often, and going 800 or 1100 into their game is too much to risk. Under all other conditions, I bid 2H.....but I’d be very afraid Opposite my partners, I’d pass, nervously.
nudnikbp
It's hard to follow mikeh, but South's spade king is in the right position and he has just enough for 2H.

mikeh
It's hard to follow mikeh, but South's spade king is in the right position and he has just enough for 2H.Yeah, poorly written. But I’d pass in my partnerships due to our opening almost all 11 counts, thus partners pass means we are very unlikely to have game, and the hand is too dangerous to want to fight for a partial. Passing might lose 5-6 imps but it won’t lose 12. Plus, sometimes passing with values leads the opps astray. Very close decision and in a 15-17 1N style, thus partner passes balanced 11 counts, I’d be (nervously) overcalling
Huibertus
2♥ Yes, it's dangerous. But it is also the one and only chance to reach a 4 ♥ game. And that counts vul at teams.

Mike H and I pretty much know there is no 4♥ game on due to what we open on in first seat. I absolutely agree with his assessment.

AL78
I pass. The suit quality is not quite good enough for a red vs white overcall (I'd like a sixth heart), and with my luck at the bridge table I am not pushing it.

There is no sensible action with this hand..and the vulnerability is against you.Best to pass and await developments. Bidding 2 ♥with that suit is just tempting Fate.. bluenikki
Hand here This went for 800 Do you think partner should stick his neck out with an SOS xx? No, but overcaller should run to 3♣. Never pass out a low-level penalty double or penalty pass unless you are *certain* running will make it worse. Not just *fear* you will make it worse. Huibertus
Mike H and I pretty much know there is no 4♥ game on due to what we open on in first seat. I absolutely agree with his assessment. In order to almost be certain it is not reasonable 4♥ vulnerable, you need an opening bid for west on a hand like this; ♠ 7 5 3, ♥ Q J 7 5, ♦ A 9 7 5 3, ♣ 8 Do you? That would be pretty effective here indeed.

You also probably aren't oubidding or beating 4♠ if they're 3-1 or making 4♥ on a trump lead unless diamonds are 3-3.
sfi
Do you think partner should stick his neck out with an SOS xx?I would have overcalled 2H. I would redouble for sos now. I would not be confident about either action, but experience suggests when they pass this double, with a game bonus on the line, they are usually right. That would be pretty effective here indeed.Anyone can make up hands to fit what they want to do. Bridge is a game of probabilities, and the odds are that partner does NOT have a magic layout. I am not a fan of double dummy simulations in most situations. We don’t (at least I don’t) play double dummy but even more importantly such simulations are heavily dependent upon the constraints. However, this sort of situation likely does lend itself to a simulation. You’d have to design the constraints to exclude hands where partner would have bid, and for what rho considers a 1S opening. You’d also need to look at each hand and decide how the auction would go were you to overcall, and that’s very difficult to do once one knows the cards: there is a tendency to let one’s prior beliefs influence one’s views. However, such an approach is infinitely better than sitting down and coming up wupith hands that make one’s preferred bidding work well,
