First BBO experience playing Moscito

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I thought I would mention to the people who are interested in playing moscito... (see threads...

http://forums.bridgebase.com/in...ay;threadid=669

and

http://forums.bridgebase.com/in...ay;threadid=784 )

that I played my first set of moscito boards with Luis yesterday. I don't know if I am the first of the students to give it a whirl. Luis and I played 16 boards. For me, worrying about the bidding, and thinking about the bidding during the play (what did I do wrong, what should I have bid) was only slightly distracting. We had a couple of very good results, and the expected disaster (I was thinking german moscito on one sequence, so I took a leap to 3C over 1NT as preemptive, it was in reality splinter for spades...so we missed a makable 4S contract).

All in all, the game was fun, and I wasn't too lost... perhaps because we didn't get into but two or three relay auctions. I am looking forward to a chance to try this system again.

Important comment:

While MOSCITO is a "relay system", in most cases you don't have too many relay auctions.

Typically relays only get used when you are exploring for slam or need to identify the best game.

Most of the time, the MOSCITO are simple and direct.

With this said and done, during our last couple outings Ron and I have had a disturbing number of strong club openings. Never a happy thing.

This is the log of the training session, you can access the hands to see what happened using the www.bridgebase.com/myhands feature, use lrargerich or inquiry as usernames to get the hands. They were played the 3rd of August.

11:30 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3NN= 400 1.93

11:39 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3NN-2 -200 -6.80

11:43 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 1NS+2 150 0.13

11:49 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3DE-4 400 9.80

12:12 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3SE-1 50 -1.13

12:19 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3NS+1 430 5.60

12:28 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3SE= -140 -1.60

12:41 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 5DN-1 -100 -4.33

12:47 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3NNx-1 -200 0.40

12:55 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 4HN-1 -50 -1.00

13:00 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 2SE+1 -140 -1.00

13:04 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 5SS+1 480 0.13

13:09 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 4SN= 420 3.13

13:20 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 4SN= 420 6.33

13:24 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 1NW= -90 -1.47

13:31 inquiry lrargerich cupcup martujes 3NNxx+1 1400 13.67

It's interesting to see that nobody got beyond 4s in a hand where 6s was laydown if pd has the sQ or if spades are 2-2. Spades were 2-2 and we did make 6 but the point is that you must try for 6.

Finally 3nxx making 4 on a fine endplay by Ben is always a nice way to end a session :-)

And if you look at them, don't look at board 8 (5Dx-1), because I clearly misplayed it. That should have been a big pickup for the bidding system (wining 9 imps instead of losing those 4)... getting to 5 should have been a very good result.

Don't feel bad - I've been cleaning up my method for the eventual release of Key Lime Precision Version 11 on 15 September. As usual it's open source and will be available to all via the website. And for once there will be a mid-chart section for those that want to play those "whacked" bids that the little old ladies hate.

By the way, I'd be delinquent if I didn't mention the wonderful contributions that Samantha, my girlfriend, has contributed to KLPV11. :) I'm a most lucky man.

  • 2 weeks later...

Luis and I gave Moscito a second try. We are using his version of Moscito which can be found at....

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/moscito/file...System%20Notes/

We played 32 hands, and ended up +34 imps (easy math, about 1 imp per board). Not bad considering this is only the second time I have played moscito and it showed on the third hand were I was terrible on the bidding and antother board where I held fair fit, one more hcp than I possible could hold (super max) and didn't bid game when invited...because I wrongly thought my bid was forcing. Live and learn....

And a funny thing. We scored +2760 on one hand to pick up more than half our imp total. This is an odd score... 7NT bid and made, vul is +2320, so this was a very good score. The magic contract? 1NTxx making 6.

Another exciting pick up was a hand were partner opened 2NT showing weak hand and at least 5-4 in minors. I held x xxxxx AKT QJxx the next hand, vul, doubled. I bid 5 clubs and we make!!! This picked up 5 imps for us.

All in all, we didn't play the best bridge in the world... we doubled them in a cold 5S and let them make an overtrick. We got to a great 5 club contract that I misplayed losing 2 imps instead of picking up 7... but the bidding overall was fine. Moscitio is seems easy to learn.
