There seems to be increasing confusion over when one should alert a bid rather than to announce a bid. Wouldn’t it be easIer for everyone that if an explanation of a bid Is given, it is automatically alerted? This way no one should be confused and it would decrease the amount of time lost in explaining, and re-explaining bids as nauseum ?

The person who makes an unusual bid should explain it using the text field next to the bid. If they forget to do it when they bid, they can do so later by clicking on the bid, clicking the Explain button and then entering the explanation.

 

Once a bid has an explanation attached, it is highlighted. Both opponents (and any kibitzers) can see this and read the explanation at their leisure. The partner of the person who made the bid cannot see the highlight, alert or explanation.

If you explain the bid, it's shown in a different color. If you click the Alert button, it gets a red border. If you do both, it gets both.

 

So the bid is highlighted in either case.
