Difficult hands to bid

We had some difficult hands last night, I've selected three examples that maybe of interest, all kinds of comments are welcome. The posted auction is what happened at the table.

Let's start with #1:

[hv=d=n&v=n&n=satxhakqtxxdakxcj&s=sjxxxxhjxdqxcktxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

The bidding was:

2 - 2 (5+HCP not a "real" positive, geebrally 5-10)

2 - 2

3 - 4

4N - 5 (0-3)

5

Down 1

I would have just bid 4s over 3s and not cuebid. I am very concerned over trump quality.

1) If I understand 2d=around 5-10 hcp?

2) Not sure what the advantage is of showing HCP rather than some control showing over 2c openings. Even a simple:

2D=1+ control but denies good long suit

2H=zero controls

Give me relays (after a strong 1 opening) and we end up safely in 4 since we just don't have enough strength and north knows that south doesn't have any tophonours. Otherwise it's probably hard to stop...

There are occasions when a splinter with 3 trumps is fine. However, in the auction

2C 2D

2H 2S

4C

Responder doesn't have a strong 5 card spade suit as he might have bid it on the previous round. Therefore I believe this is a situation when a 4th trump is necessary. However

2C 2D

2S 4C

In this situation, a splinter on three trumps is fine, since to bid a second suit then splinter may lead to too much space being taken.

splinters with 3 trumps are a losing proposition.

Disagree. It is my opinion that the most important message of the splinter bid is shortness. I don't think 4 card support so urgent to tell as the shortness.

unfortunately my dad agrees with you :) we had an auction once where I had

AK

Axxx

AKJxxx

A

My partner ended up splintering in hearts after having shown a very very weak hand. I had an obvious 7D bid. Unfortunately he had 3 trumps and they led one lol. Anyways I know this is an isolated story but it goes to an important principle

A stiff is much stronger when you have 4 trumps than when you have 3 trumps

Partner is going to misevaluate alot of hands because when he assumes you have 4 trumps and a stiff he will start envisioning losers and will miscount them often when you fail to deliver the fourth trump.

Hi,

I am not sure, but I think, if the partnership is playing

serious 3NT, than 4 NT is an overvid.

In this case 4C says, I have a cue, but nothing more,

minimum HCP or a controll poor hand.

It would be great, if it showed a top honor, which would

be the case in my partnership, but this is not really

necessary in this case.

If the partnership does not play serious 3NT, than 5S-1 is

unlucky.

With kind regards

Marlowe
