InTime
Does this rule only apply for 1st or 2nd position?
barmar
You're in South Africa, so I'm guessing you mean SABF jurisdiction. https://www.sabf.co.za/laws/SABF%20CONVENTION%20CONTROL.pdf says:Normal Opening Bids The range shall be from a minimum which conforms to the Rule of 20, up to amaximum of 17HCP. This does not preclude the use of a normal opening bidwith a stronger hand which is subsequently redefined in the rebid, or conformingto the rule of 18 in third seat. One cannot open a 12 HCP 4333 in first or second seat ?
TylerE
Or an 18+ artificial 1♣?
weejonnie
Or an 18+ artificial 1♣?You can open an artificial 1♣ as a rebid can then define its strength as per the last part of the requirement. Also the definition for a strong Club is found later in the document. It does look as if you can't open 1NT on a 12 point 4333 in 1st or 2nd position though! I don't like the rule forbidding more than one 'similar' psych in a tournament. Personally I think the SABC is overextending its authoriity. lamford
It does look as if you can't open 1NT on a 12 point 4333 in 1st or 2nd position though!About as ludicrous as the EBU rules on opening an artificial 2C. For example, in South Africa, if barmar is correct, you can open a weak NT, or one of a minor, on ♠QJ ♥QJ ♦KQxx ♣xxxxx, which is 8.75 on the K-R evaluator. However you cannot open ♠ATx ♥ATx ♦AT9x ♣T9x which is 13.75 on the K-R., a full five points better!
