I think the double alerts partner to the fact that he needs to do something unusual on the lead. So what comes up more often asking for major lead or unusual lead?

If that question is addressed to me, I'm not sure, I'm not an expert on frequencies.

What I do know is that I would expect partner to lead a major by default (see awm's post in other thread) and so I would double to try to get him to change the default lead.

:D

Bridge is a game of percentages. If you don't double partner is very likely NOT to lead your suit. She will almost certainly be looking at two or three small. AFTER the double, she can rule out any suit where she holds a high honour, and favour leading her doubleton over four small or even three small. The other side is usually balanced and so has some small cards in your suit, leaving little room for partner to hold your suit.

The upshot is that after the double, partner should have a much greater than even chance at finding the killing lead vs. almost NO chance if you don't double. The payoff matrix is convincing. NVUL you are gambling a loss of 150, 250 or 350 versus a gain of 700 or even more. VUL it's 150, 350 etc. versus 1100.

This is why you double with any runner in any suit, vul or nvul. Indeed, a solid suit missing the ace with an outside ace in a short suit and some length in the other two suits is a candidate as well. Partner will not ALWAYS guess right, but bridge is a game of ________________.

Pass

unless partner and I have discussed meaning of double. The bidding on the surface seems to call for a major suit lead (no stayman). Assuming (always a risk) that the bidding has been similar at other tables, I don't wish to risk a bottom (or even more imps) my hitting the contract and having it wrapped around my neck when partner doesn't know what to lead and they run 9+ tricks off the top (dummy rates to have a number of clubs). And if partner actually wins a trick, there's always a second chance for a diamond shift, especially if a signal has been available.

If playing with my 1 F2F partner, I have nothing to worry about: he always leads diamonds anyway (lolololol--it's a long story)
