Would you open this? Not quite the right shape for Burgess's law (thanks Ron) but too good to pass?

I did open 4♠ and made , was I just lucky?

Must admit I would have opened a lite 1S. Bidding 4s would not have occured to me with p being an UPH but......

Open 1S, if your pd will understand (most would), and 4S if she won't.

 

Don't pass, whatever your agreements.

i'd open 1♠ also.. as far as i know, we have a club slam... danger of 1♠ is obvious, opps can bid.. but i think advantages outweigh this single disadvantage

4♠ is definitely ok at matchpoints.

 

At imps I'd prefer pass or open 1♠. But any action can be right or wrong.. lol.

I'd just like to add that I think a 4♠ opener is absolutely disgusting, lol. On a bad day you'll get forced and your second suit will land up worthless - and the chances of it being a bad day aren't small! Pass is reasonable IMO, if you pass now you'll probably be able to bid lots later to get your shape across without getting partner too excited.

I think opening 1S this hand depends on the agreements with your partner.

 

How many defensive tricks does ur pard expect for a 1-level opener in 1st/2nd seat ?

 

A common agreement is that a 1-level opener promises 2+ defensive tricks.

 

So if opps compete, our pard can count on 2 defensive tricks from us when he decides whether to double or not.

I am not going to say whether the agreement of 2+ def tricks is best or not, but I only want to state that THERE HAS to be an agreement on the minimum amount of defensive tricks.

 

There are advantages and disadvantages of opening such a light hand:

 

- you'll be able to open more often, and find a fit more often;

 

- but on the other hand pard won't be able to X opps when you DO have a normal opener; besides, pard will have trouble deciding when 3NT is a good spot;

Having said that, I personally would open this hand only in 3rd seat; in 1st/2nd seat I'd open it only oif I have available some weak 2-suiters a la Muiderberg.

(and I'd never open 3/4S).

 

Sure, there are quyite a few hands where it works, but it seems to me that discipline usually keeps partner happy, and that's the best convention to me :-)

Surely a style thing. I would also PASS. Almost always you will get another turn. Also if you cannot cuebid later on to show the 2-suiter, partner should figure out that you did not open a weak two for some reason and the reason is the 2-suiter.

I would pass and hope to show a two suiter later on. At what level i dont know, but if i thought about opening 4 spades then having to show a two suiter at a high level must be ok too.

I open a cheery ONE spade. :-) 4S is a possible overbid. We also have a rebid.

With a super-tolerant pard, playing rule of 20, anything goes cheese platter hand openers you could consider opening that plate of cheddar 1S white vs red. Less objectionable is 2S despite the 2nd (craptastic) suit (Hearts, Hearts, who's got the Hearts?).

Since 1 S promises values, defense and system sanity, why spend the rest of the auction lying or braking when you can pass and get in as appropriate using your other system tools (you do own the boss suit)......

Since my partner would hang me if I opened 1S, I have to pass. I really don't like 4S, not so much that I may miss slam but that I may get hammered for -1100.

 

My partner's don't like it when I bring back those kinds of numbers - they just don't have much of a "sporting" view, LoL.

Yes I think you were extremely lucky :o

Opening 4♠ on that hand vul could have landed you minus 800 /1100!!-- which would be a bad result (unless opps have a slam) :D

 

Personally I would have passed - Partner still has a bid - and I prefer my opening 4 to show a MUCH better suit and no other possible suit to play -- and it also preserves partnership trust :D

3♠ for me. 4♠ seems a long way off if partner has less than two spades and may not be so good if partner has exactly two spades (unless it is QJ).
