Why not transfer to clubs?

Xfer then show shortage, avoids 3nt with a stopper.

In this case wouldn't you get to exactly the same contract? Or are you really not bidding 3NT over 3?

With weakness in both majors, not pinpointing them to the opposition when you quite possibly have 9 running tricks isn't exactly the worst bid GIB has made.

Yes, the contract would have been the same.

Maybe you are right that it makes sense only to show the singletons with slamish hands. Is that how GIB works?

Did West bang down AK and East unblock the J for down one on the go? If a small heart is led you make 5NT. Don't know about GIB, but I'd lead small against 1NT-3NT, but bang down the ace against 1NT-club transfer-super accept-3NT.

GIB (North)'s 3N is probably the best practical match-pointed pairs effort and he was unlucky that his bidding judgement was matched by the defensive brilliance of GIB (East and West).
