smerriman asks 'What do you bid?'

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Difficult problem. Without any special agreements, I rank

1. 3 = UCB Overbid but we do have a fair hand.

2. Double = NEG But we don't have 4 s,

3. 2N = NAT. Risky without a -stop and might wrong-side,

4. 3 = NAT Underbid.

5, Pass = NAT. Possible at MPs but dangerous at imps.

6. 3 = NAT but the suit isn't worth mentioning.

Sirs. There are 12 HCP, THREE quick tricks,5 controls but at the same time NINE losers. Because of the 2H overcall ,although there are 6 available bids none of them is satisfactory to depict the hand correctly.If one is playing negative doubles ,let us presume upto 2S, with compulsory take out by opener then PASS is a certain choice but failing that the preferred bid is a NEGATIVE double which is the least of the evil.(Treating that AK10 of S as a four card suit).

What do you do with a NT-type hand without a stopper?

The real problem hand is the given hand, but an Ace replaced by a Queen.

My guess is, that they agreed to reopen agressive with shortage in their suit,

and that the reopening does not promise add. strength.

The advantage is, that it simplifies life if a spade fit got discovered, the disadv.

that you may get to high, and end up playing some stupid 43 fits on the 4 level.

It may also matter, if you play weak or strong NT.
