Gerber or Blackwood

Recommended Posts

GIB opens 1NT. I bid 2c with AKx KJxx AKXxx x. GIB replies 2H.

GIB could have QJx XXXX QJx AKQ and any slam is in jeopardy. Or GIB could have QJX AQXX Qxx AXX and 7 is a odds on.

I would like to check for Aces and possibly Q of hearts. If I jump to 4NT GIB will pass with either hand. A Jump to 4C is not Ace Asking.

How do I ask for aces?

Since you have a singleton club, you can bid 4, showing heart support and shortness. You can then use Blackwood over opener's response.

The other way to game force after Stayman is to bid 3 of the other major. 3 is an artificial bid agreeing hearts, and invites a cuebid. You can then use Blackwood over opener's response.

Since GIB might well bid 5 over 4 and not leave you a method to find out about the queen of trumps, I would go with the latter.
