Stratify opponents

Recommended Posts

1. I think that it is a mistake to assume that there is an strong correlation with bridge skill and the rankings that BBO provides

2. If you feel strongly about this, serve a table and don't seat people with high rankings

The number/letter is just based on the total number of BBO points the player has. Similar to ACBL Masterpoints, these are mostly correlated with the number of tournaments that you play, not necessarily your expertise. I have lots of points (and became a J a couple of years ago) mostly because I work for BBO, so I can play tourneys for free, and as a result I play a LOT (mostly robot tourneys), and have been earning 30-40 points/mo for the past 8 years.

Anyway, stratification of tournaments is based on these points (or just ACBL Masterpoints for ACBL tourneys). But stratification doesn't mean that you only play against players with similar ranks, it means that the points awarded are based on comparing your results with those players. That's the difference between flighted tournaments and stratified tournaments.

There's no stratification in the main bridge club, since no points are awarded for play there. However, if you use "Help me find a game", similar rank is one of the criteria it uses when looking for a good table.
