To Brexit

I don't have to read anything because I have the promise of David Davis: " There will be no downside to Brexit, only a considerable upside." Or so I read. dry.gif

NEW: for this week’s column I dug into the curious case of British attitudes to immigration

Before the EU ref, concern about immigration tracked levels of arrivals. Since then, immigration has kept rising but concerns have evaporated

What’s going on?

So a year from now, I'll ask all the Brexit supporters in this thread to name one practical gain the UK got from Brexit (other than making it harder for immigrants like me to move to the country - you'll understand that I am not that sympathetic to that view). But don't hesitate to make predictions now if you want to be ahead of the game.

A little late, but anyway, here is a chance for all the Brexit supporters to name a concrete tangible gain the UK got from Brexit ("control" over immigration excepted).

I'm sure that there are many folks in the UK who dislike tomatoes....

Which is actually not really a Brexit problem. Our supermarkets could get tomatoes if they were prepared to pay the price for them (from home or abroad), but unlike in Europe, they agree their contracts a long way in advance and won't vary them. They're not prepared to pay the market price, hence their suppliers aren't turning the heating on in the greenhouses here, and suppliers in Europe are selling at much better rates locally.

That's probably true as the UK still hasn't implemented most of the border controls. Which kind of raises the question about the benefits of the whole thi----sorry, I think I am repeating myself.

Also Ireland has the same problems https://www.irishtimes.com/food/2023/02/21/supply-of-vegetables-to-ireland-disrupted-by-poor-weather-and-energy-costs/

Are there any Brexit supporters here - or any prepared to own up - many who dislike the EU though possibly, and bureaucratic excesses

- wondering what wonderful contortions and systems of corruption are now available with the complex border issues - what a potential scam (I didn't say that)

I thought the point was to reduce bureaucratic excess

It was very distressing to me on my first post-Brexit visit to Europe to realise that I was no longer entitled to go through EU-lanes - it was almost embarassing and shameful having to be directed through another lane

There are many, several of whom have actively posted misinformation about the EU at various times. The vast majority of populist stories regarding EU bureaucratic excess are actually either taken out of context or completely false when you look into them a little deeper than the typical tabloid headline. Sadly these stories are so widely spread that the majority of people think they are true. That is particularly true for the low-skilled, low educated sector that made up such a large portion of the Yes vote after having been manipulated with various lies and other underhanded schemes. I remain deeply ashamed and embarrassed about my countrymen for having ripped up one of the most favourable international trade agreements in the world and replaced it with xenophobic chaos.

A strange defence of a non-existent attack. My post needed to be dredge up did it. I think you will it is the educated who hate bureaucratic excess as much if not more - lets say anyone on the receiving end with a brain - that's a lot of people - educated or not

I also find it strange that allegedly I posted that in 10 March this year. It seems wrong to me. What was the context. I can't be bothered to check. Maybe I was just having a bad day

Since the Roman empire (and probably even much earlier) educated elites have used and manipulated "uneducated masses". There is nothing inherently different about the way the Brexit movement was spread. I cannot speak to your mindset or day when you wrote the post. But I do not read every WC thread immediately and simply responded after reading this one - no dredging required.
