rmnka447
I'll open it -- 2 QTs and a 12 count with some intermediates, not even close.
TMorris
There are a few 12 counts I won't open ( passed Jxxx Q109 Axxx KQ vul in 3rd quite recently rather than open a weak NT) but not many. This is an automatic opening for me.

msjennifer
Soir,And why not ? 12HCP.No wasted points(except perhaps CQ .We don't consider it wasted). 2 honor tricks and only 6 losers,Good support in 3 suits. One does not need any thing more.Easy rebid is an added virtue. mdgraham
If playing a 12-14 1NT, yes. But I wouldn't be overly sanguine about it. If playing a 15-17 1NT, yes, 1C. Easy rebid over anything pard bids.
pescetom
1D playing a strong NT, not even close.
nudnikbp
One diamond, then 1NT over partner's one spade response. Two quick tricks, twelve high card points, no reason not to open.
stev1998
I evaluate this hand like this12 HCP so far so goodNo aces that is a minus deduct a point touching honours in the red suits thats a plus back to 12 again. 2 3 4 4 shape is poor but the points are in the long suits and no wasteage in spades so we break even again. So we have bare opening and the quetion now is what happens if you open 1D and partner says 1H ?You are asking for trouble bidding 1NT with a doubleton spadeand 2C sound 5 4 in the minors. If you have an agreement with partner that you can raise hearts with 3 then you can open. But you cannot spring a 3 card raise on him without prior agreementIf you don't then I think pass is best and wait developmentsOf course if it goes 1D 1S then you have a easy 1NT and everyone will wonder why if you pass in the first place

torgums
I don't open balanced 12 counts. However I played with a partner who used any excuse to open for about a year. After every game, I reviewed the hand records and noted our result, and the top for the board, for every board where we had the option of bidding or passing a balanced 12 count. I entered them into a spreadsheet. On the hands that I passed we averaged 55%. On the hands where partner opened we averaged 38%. Does anybody else have any statistics?
gszes
sigh no and do not expect much sympathy from the "its just too stinking boring to pass crowd". I do not see the benefits. I do not wish to encourage a weak partner to bid 2s I have ZERO quick tricks (aces) or SPOTS. I would not even game force opposite a 3rd seat opener so all in all silence seems to be the best choice OH and did I mention no good lead directing bid? let me see what else can I complain about:) I open balanced 12 counts a lot but not these boring aimless 12 counts. And Gordon's auction is the reason you open 1♦ rather than 1♣.

I play a weak 1N and yes this was very common here, getting a bit less common but still very common at lower levels. It is known as the lowest preempt in the book with good reason. sultro
Playing weak NT, this isn't even close, yes always. Playing strong nt, I like my bid less, but I'm still popping it open a diamond. It's a little better if we are at least playing Spiral. Regular partner will never believe I have this much strength if I have passed.
