ciscokid
There were several 2005 "wish list enhancements" that I posed sometime ago. I've updated what's been done as an FYI. -CK ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When you are invited to a team game, having the ability to tell (by color) whether your opps, partner or teammates are your friends, or enimies-----> Nothing done Ability to bring up a saved pre-alert (ie: Greetings opps, we play 2/1, ud/ca, multi) instead of having to type it each time. More beneficial when playing in tournaments.-----> New alert box created. Great 1st step Dramatic overhaul of the Teams invite system-----> Invite much easier in that you can easily add players by clicking on them. The ability to click on user's name and going to their table-----> DONE! The ability to cut and paste BBO chat-----> DONE! The ability to send a private message to multiple people at the same time-----> Nothing done. Is this being considered? Swiss team tournaments-----> Nothing so far. Is this something being considered and can be done? Obtain pair results (MP, IMP scores, etc.)when specing players in tournaments-----> Being considered and may be implemented in the future

adf
Private msg to many: not on our radar screen at the momentCurrently, the only way to do this is to send a public message via lobby chat. I'd like to get rid of lobby chat (Uday wrote in a separate thread that he wants to, also), so this would be a good feature to implement in preparation for that change. MickyB
Private msg to many: not on our radar screen at the moment I think this would be a very useful feature. IIRC you were worried about it being used for spam - maybe it could be done in the form of groups that individuals are invited to join and can leave at any time? Or possibly better, a feature that allows you to send chat to all friends, but they only receive it if they also have you in their list of friends? I've never been a big fan of re-inventing the wheel... More specifically, there are a wide number of online gaming sites that dwarf BBO in terms of user base. The Massively Multiplayer Online Games like world of Warcraft and EverQuest being the most outstanding example. Both games have user based in the millions. These sites have had years to deal with the same issues that BBO is just now encountering (scaling, voice channels, etc). I think its worthwhile to take advantage of their experiences. World of Warcraft features four different mechanism for "One to Many" communications. The first and most basic is the system-wide broadcast. The second is so called "Chat" Channels. WoW permits any user to create and name a new Chat Channel. Once a channel has been created, players have the option to join/leave a channel at will. If a player is a member of a given channel, he can send messages at will. The third are so-called guild channels. "Guilds" function similarly to private clubs on BBO. Once a guild has been formed, players need to petion for membership. Once a player joins, they have a guild channel that can be used communicate with all guild members. Guild channels are heirarchical in nature. Members can be assigned different "levels" (officer, initiate, etc.). "Talk" privledges can be linked to membership levels. Please note that both Chat and Guild channel are "Opt In" services. Players can not be sureptiously added to a chat channel. Rather, they need to seek one out and subscribe. In a similar fashion, players can withdrawl from a chat channel at any point in time. Chat and Guild channels are both text based. Players who require a voice channel use third party VoIP services. The two most popular are ventrilo (http://www.ventrilo.com/) and TeamSpeak (http://www.goteamspeak.com/news.php)
jillybean
I was hosting a table last night when a kibitzer joined and soon the conversation went: Kibitzer good seein’ you allPlayer are we that good lookin?Player or have you been looking at farm animals all day?Kibitzer you are every bit as good looking as my yard apes And on… This may be an extreme case but why would anyone want to promote and encourage this type of behavior, as surely chat channels will. BBO is a bridge site, leave the chaters to yahoo and the like. jillybean2
uday
Jillybean, I think some alterations to chat are inevitables. The chat channels Richard was describing are similar to our chat rooms, but sound less bulky. Richard, if any of a million users can create a chat channel, how does someone find a chat channel? Arent there thousands open at any one point in time ?
hrothgar
Richard, if any of a million users can create a chat channel, how does someone find a chat channel? Arent there thousands open at any one point in time ? WoW is a graphic based combat game that requires real time updates to/from all players regarding the postion/status of all other players. They have a mmuch more extreme version of the scaling issues that BBO is experiencing. Accordingly, the developers were forced to partion the system into multiple parallel worlds (very similar to the mini-BBO idea) North America alone supports approximately 100 separate "realms". So, its not quite so bad as you think... With this said and done, while players have the option of creating separate and distinct channels, there is typically little need to do so. All players who are with a localized geographical setting can hear each other talk. Players can yell to extend the range at which people can hear them. All players who are in a "party" automatically have their own channel to converse (A party is a group of between 5 and 40 players who have banded together to achieve some goal. A party can be seen as an equivalent to a "table"). In a similar fashion, all players who are in the same guild also share a default channel. (Private Clubs like Abalucy are probably the closest equivalent to a Guild): Typically, when players create their own channels they do so because a large group of players share a common interest: Examples of public channels include: "Role playing""Trade" - Buying or selling items"Looking for Groups""Characters Between L50 and L60"... From my perspective, the default chat options are sufficiently robust that players have not felt the need to create 1001 private channels. In most cases, players who would want to create a private channel for socializing do so within the context of a guild... For what its worth, I think that you/Fred might really benfit from taking some time to play a game like WoW and see how they addressed similar issues...
