Agree with the majority. Something funny is up. Rho PASSED the X? Pard probably has a big NT, or a big heart hand. He doesnt have a normal t/o X unless lho has about 9 spades and 20 points.

This hand shows one of the reasons why I don't like doubling with off shape or single suited hands that are strong. If you knew that pard could only have the unbid suits or a balanced hand, 2D would not occur to anyone. As it is, we must go slow with 2D on the off chance that pard might have an 18 count, 6 hearts and a stiFf D.

I dont think anyone likes Xing with a hand like

Kxx AKQxxx x AKx

but I wonder what the other option is because i cant see it... As for it being an "off chance" that pard has the strong version as opposed to a t/o X i'd say thats almost 100 % given RHOs pass.

Why is the double off shape?

RHO didn't raise after partner's takeout double...

Whats more likely?

1. Partner is holding a strong hand with short Diamonds. (Typically a big NT oriented hand with a doubleton Dimaond or potentially a strong single suited hand with Spades or Clubs?

2. Both partner and RHO have short Diamonds (This means that LHO has an 8+ card suit)

3. RHO is playing a deep game and concealing his Spade support

Personally, I think that 1 is much more likely

Hi,

I would just overcall 2C, unless you

are playing unlimited overcalls, since

I dont like off shape doubles, and this

one is missing a diamond.

With kind regards

Marlowe

I overcall 1NT (raptor/polish). This shows the other major (most play as four cards) and one minor. It is PERFECT for these kind of hands, the downside is you can no longer overcall 1NT natural. This downside is not nearly as far down as the upside is up on the minor-major 1NT overcall.

Misho has insisted that we add hands that are 5-5 or better to this 1NT overcall. Traditionally I have been a vanilla raptor player. Misho's theory of the RAPTOR with five-five or better is as follows. Overcaller can be 4-5 (on auction like this), with either minor. However, if he has five in the other major, he has a good hand (no crappy 1NT overcalls with 5-5), and he will bid the major over partners response. When holding 5-5, by definition, the minor will be the CHEAPER one (or if they open 1NT, the major will be spades). With 5-5 and the lower two, we use unusual 2NT. So this is a hybrid raptor 1NT/top bottom cue-bid use of 1NT. So far, it has at least been fun to play.

Three possibilities would come to my mind when I hold this hand and heard RHO opened 1: dbl->2->2. I think I would choose dbl eventually.

After pd's 2, I would try 3 since I chose to dbl. if pd rebid 3, I would pass. For the hand given, pd's 3 or pass were acceptable, though pass is preferred.

What about opener having a strong 1 suiter?

I would bid 2 rather than double but its jsut a matter of style, not judgement.
