6-5 come alive?

I bid 1, I have the advantage that over 1N (quite likely next for us 15-bad 19) I can rebid 2 showing a heap of filth 5-5.

Why 5-5? What would you bid with a minimum 5-4-3-1 shape? We have a similar NT range.

Agree with 1S response. Then pass a 2D rebid but bid 2S over a 2C rebid.

We would pass the absolute rock bottom min 5431, 2 over 1N on 7+, we can also bid 2 showing a 5-5 pile over 2 (2 with almost all inv+ hands)

points schmoints (M Bergen) this hand has some decent playing power and I refuse to even consider passing 1d due to lack of HCP. I start the festivities with 1s and see just how much trouble I have gotten us in when p chimes in with whatever they do. If perchance they bid 2s/3s I am bidding 4s. Over 1n 2h and see if partner likes that at all. Over 2n 3h which should at least give p something to think about since this should promise 5+ hearts since p would have had an easy 2h reverse if they had 4 hearts.

I'm definitely bidding 1 to start.

First of all, if partner is opening on a 3 card suit, we probably have a 9 or 10 card fit in one of the majors. 1 passed out may not work out so well when 4th seat shows up with 5 and elects to pass rather than reopen.

If you play NMF, then 2 over partner's 1 NT can be a weak bid on at least 5-5 that's pass or correct.

Likewise, if partner rebids 2 NT and you don't want to be as aggressive as gszes, if you play Wolff, you can sign off in 3 by bidding 3 . 3 forces opener to relay to 3 and a rebid of by you is a sign off. Also, if you use Wolff and want to proffer like gszes, then

1 - 1

2 NT - 3 (Wolff)

3 - 3

shows at least 5-5 without slam interest while

1 - 1

2 NT - 3

is at least mildly slammish.

Like others over any nonforcing rebid, you can pass. Over a 2 rebid, 2 is still a weak signoff.

2 would in my opinion be an underbid. You have a for sure fit. Find it and at least invite if not id game.

Partner doesn't have to pass with max and big fit, he expects me to have 5-6 points and 5-5, and that's near enough to what I have that I'll allow him to make a decision. Only likely to be badly wrong opposite something like KQ stiff in spades. This is the point of playing it as 5-5 and taking the possible loss on the 5-4s.

If you haven't agreed 2 and 2 to show weak major 2-suiters then 1 seems the automatic reply to partner's 1 opener but

partner's 3 rebid, presents you with a hard problem. I rank

1. 3N = NAT

2. 3 = NAT, You do have 6 of them and partner's jump rebid might be based on a fit.

3. 3 = NAT. Partner might expect better support.

4, 3 = Whatever that means. (Partner has at most 3 s).

5. 4 = NAT? Weak? OK with those agreements,

6. Pass = Even if this reduces the damage, partner will never forgive you.[/hv]

Over the jump shift, I'm simply rebidding 3 . Partner is driving the auction. There's no support or preference for either of partner's suits. Sometimes you have to just get out of partner's way and let them tell their story.

I think it's very close between 3 and 3N, it may be all partner needs to know is that you have a heart stop.

Obviously we would respond 1S, unless we had some science available to us. Having done that, if partner rebids 2D, I'm done, even though we may have missed a cold heart game in a 5-4 fit. If partner rebids 1N, I bid 2H. Partner rates to have too much wastage in the minors for game to have play.

Fortunately for me, in my partnerships we do have science available in the form of a meckwell response showing 5+ spades and 4+ hearts and a weak hand.

I've been playing this in any partnership with an expert for at least 20 years, and it works well. Opener can pass or correct to 2S, or can ask about my hand via an artificial 2N, over which I can't show this exact hand but can show a 'good' in context 5-5 if I want to be aggressive (which I would, with this hand, if playing imps but not at mps)
