Christmas quadruple coup

This doesn't seem too difficult, the aim is to leave this position:

[hv=pc=n&s=s7h54dc&w=skj8hdc&n=sa9hd2c&e=shdc]399|300[/hv](or the equivalent with 7JA gone) with south having the lead and NS having all the tricks so far.

So, say K lead for example.

1. win A

2. A

3. ruff

4. to Q

5. ruff

6. to A

7. ruff

8. to the 10 and Q

9. cash Q

10. club ruff leaving the first position, now you lead a heart, winning 9 if it's ruffed low, discarding if it's ruffed with the K or J and then finessing.

I don't believe there's any defence or lead that interferes with this basic theme of making dummy's 3 trumps, 2 diamonds, one club, two hearts 3 club ruffs and a diamond ruff.

Funny deal but a terminology question for the non-native speaker I am. Aren't you supposed to trump winners to make it a coup (which funnily enough is a word of my native language!)?

A trump coup is when you shorten your trumps to pick up an opponent's trumps.

if you trump winners then it;s called a grand coup

In this case, coup is probably a misnomer -- an elopement might be a more appropriate description

SIR,I have seen a very similar hand in my Dads repertory wherein he has given it as an example of "TRUMP PROMOTION WITH A LOSER ON LOSER PLAY".COUP. As a matter of fact it is, some may say, an ENPASSANT after a throw in. I also think of another term " AUTOMATIC TRUMP FINESSE AFTER A THROW IN END PLAY" All in all a very interesting position..

or Plafond, the French precursor of Contract Bridge, which embodies the same basic principles, with simpler rules. Happy Christmas :)

  • 2 weeks later...

This occurred today:

[hv=pc=n&s=s98743ha98dk9763c&w=shqt2dat8cak96543&n=sakqjh753dq4cqt72&e=st652hkj64dj52cj8&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=pp1c1s1n3d(fit)4c4sppp&p=cjs3c3c2d3d8dqd2d4d5d6dtcac7c8s4d7dasjdjcth4s7c5d9c4sq]399|300[/hv]

Partner succeeded in making this by ruffing 1 losing and 2 winning diamonds and 4 clubs, finally eloping with 9, it is beatable (although not after a club lead) but a nice piece of play.
