Recommended Posts

Sirs,YOU hold S-AK82.H-5,D-AQ963,C-A65.Your partner deals and opens 1NT ,,which shows 15-17 HCP, balanced, can have only one four card major and no 5 Card minor..YOU have agreed to play Stayman, 4 SUIT transfers.NO GERBER. If you bid 2C opener bids 2H. WHAT NOW.?.If you wish to proceed any other way then kindly explain in full., I shall give the openers hand and what happened in a high level Round Robin match.

With a trusted partner I would bid 3 showing 5+card forcing, hoping to find a fit and control-bid to slam in , maybe 6NT if it looks safer or playing MP.

If it was an unknown partner in internet I would just bid 6NT.

3D for us would be specifically a 5-card suit (with six we transfer to D then bid S). But 3D for us too.

My system is geared to a weak no trump so will be out of step with most people here, I can bid 2 ostensibly minor suit stayman next and partner will shape out. This has the advantage that I will know if partner has 3 or 4 diamonds if he has support here.

Sir,if one bids 2S as minor suit stayman the opener bids 3D showing a 4 card diamond suit.

This doesn't feel like a hand that should be describing. I'd be very tempted to just bid 6N.

Describing with the (realistic) objective of finding a fit in which to investigate slam more precisely.

Just 6NT is not the worst bid here and would be my choice on BBO, but if we can do better why not.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Unfamiliar with these variants of notrump-opener and minor-suit Stayman but now rank

1. 4N = if RKC. Possible grand.

2. 4 = if SPL. Setting .

3. 4 = if FG. Setting .

4. 3 = if CUE. Setting

5. 6 = NAT.

late to the party I would have started with 1n 2c 2h 3d (letting p concentrate on hearts and club for nt) After 1n 2c 2h 2s(mss) 3d I will now bid 3s which once again asks p to concentrate on hearts and clubs for NT purposes. We are in no big hurry. After this start, I will not stop short of 6d but 7d or even a highly improbable 7n are still plausible.

Sirs thanks to all of you for suggesting how to approach .I confess that I liked the the development suggested using a bid of 2S as minor suit Stayman..NOW,I shall disclose the openers hand as well as the results. In the Open room the pair reached a contract of 6NT..In the closed room I (blush) was the opener and held S-QJx,H-AQxx,D-KJxx.C-Kx .The responder bid 2NT ,a transfer to Diamonds.Over my forced 3D he bid 3S showing a double suited in S and D and slam ambition. On my 4D he bid 4H. the cheapest Cue. RKC and Spiral showed 3 Aces,DQ and SK and also denied HK .Thus his hand was S-AKxx,H-x.D-AQ to 5/6,C-Axx (Ax) .Either of these holding and I counted to 13 and bid 7D which of course made easily. The heart King was with LHO. Last but not the least it is my humble request and duty to clarify that I do not suggest that this bidding was a good method.I wanted to know better alternatives which I so lovingly got. Thanks all once again.

The point is that over a weak NT there are other priorities (like needing to bail out in 3m more often than you do over a strong NT, so we play 2 then 3m as to play), so the structures are different, also most strong no-trumpers use 1N-2-2-2 as something else with both majors, but with the strictures you have on 1N you may not need that.

Based on the description of your 1NT opening it sounds like you play a relatively old fashioned bidding system.

Most people these days open 1NT on all manner of balanced hands (including most hands in the range with a 5cM and 6cm and also including many awkward semi-balanced hand shapes like 2452 and 2425. The main advantage of this style is describing the non-minimum value of those hands in one bid (and eliminating your rebid problem). Your opponents will also find the opening lead and subsequent defense a lot tougher versus a more liberal 1NT.

If you haven't tried this method before I can strongly recommend giving it a go. I think you'll be surprised how many good results you get opening a more 'undisciplined' 1NT.
