I can't think of a legitimate reason to pass this hand, and I am pretty conservative about opening hands. A weak field makes pass slightly less horrible as ops will be able to created their own disasters given enough rope. Other than that, no excuse IMO.

I wouldn't pass this hand at MPs and I generally make solid opening bids. The hand has 2 QTs with 7 seven losers and a very comfortable 2 rebid fairly certain to be available. So, in this case, there's little risk in opening the hand.

Change a low to a low making it an 8 loser hand and maybe you'd have a little more pause about opening it. And, if it were something like Kxx xxxx Ax KJxx passing might be the best option.

Only with a total misfit will this hand play badly, but that can happen with any hand irrespective of the point count and hand shape. Trying to second guess partner's cards, or for that matter the opponent's at this juncture, is ludicrous. It's not the greatest 1 opener I admit, but it's totally insane not to open in this day and age. You have an easy rebid. K&R put it at 12.75. Enough said.

p - p - p 1 is what you deserve if you play Drury (and shudder Bergen as well). I would change my vote from Not Good to Extremely Negligent/Borderline Insane depending on these agreements. You have a rebid if you open 1, you don't have a bid over a 4th seat 1 opener. Or an accurate bid over 1 by them - p - whatever by rho.

My partnership is allergic to bidding notrump with singletons so a 1 opener followed by 2 has a singleton somewhere 80+% of the time and partner can often tell where it is/may be.

I voted "not good", but I think the wording of the answers is a little over the top. A lot depends upon partnership style (and system) and I know good players who would choose to pass (although not many these days). So my actual answer would be "not good in my partnerships".

Reasons to open 1c

1. EVERY suit controlled in case partner has slam aspirations.

2. 1c a decent lead director in case opps win the bidding.

3. No rebid problem.

4. Way better (offensively) than most balanced 13 counts the universe opens.

Reasons to pass

1. Playing with a bot and they will mess up any bidding anyway.

2. Tired and passing is easier than thinking about bidding.

3. Can't get name in forums with 1c bid but maybe I can with pass.

4. This partner keeps asking me for games maybe pass will finally get them to stop.

hmmm 4 reasons for each action. Does that mean both are equally justifiable?
