pclayton
Matchpoints - All vul. Dealer on your right opens 1♦ and you are greeted with: [hv=s=saqj3hkj97daq65c4]133|100|[/hv] I'll post a follow up in a day or 2.
han
I rarely overcall in a 4-card suit, and would never do it with two good 4-card majors. I think pass is fine, but I would overcall 1NT, right on values and keeps all games in sight. As I believe Fred has often pointed out in the past, this also depends on the opponents. If they are likely to steal from you then you should try not to pass. Here they are vulnerable, which may make it slightly less dangerous. P_Marlowe
1S. Hopefully I will find it on the table.2D is a possible bid, but only if it shows both mayor and if the partnership did agree, thatit could be 4-4, for me the Michaels Cue promises 5-4, and it my be clubs and spades. With kind regardsMarlowe
whereagles
Me doubles. If pard bids 2C I probably would have to pass that... lol. Too bad, but having both majors is worth the risk.
Chamaco
1NT if it's natural (15-18).Passing this hand at first round is a risk: we have wrong shape to bid, but it seems to me an illusion to hope that pard will take any action if he has the right shape, because he will be short of hcp. And, even if we get a second chance to bid ourselves, that might happen at the 2-3 level. mike777
1NT wtp? I was 3442 with 17 hcp partner.
Echognome
Maybe it'd be more interesting if it went (1♦) - 1NT - (X) - P - (P) - ? I would be a bit nervous about 1NT then. However, that's my bid as well and I'll take my lumps if LHO has a club stack. I don't think any bid is perfect (else it wouldn't be a problem right?), but I think 1NT is closest to my true hand. hrothgar
Either 1NT or 1♠, depending largely on mood...
Guest Jlall
1S, 1N is very reasonable (better?). X I can see but over club bids i just have no bid so I dont like it although it could work out well. Pass just isnt an option with a hand this good to me
luis
1NT, I'm close to pass and double will be my third option. I really don't like 1♠ with this particular hand.
Free
1NT unless I play power Doubles.
HeartA
1NT
luke warm
1nt also... both pass and x have appeal, but i have absolutely nothing to bid over 2c, so now 1nt or pass... pass *might* be better
pclayton
I hate off shape doubles, but I chose one anyway. I think 1N is a better call. 1♠ is possible, but you'll have a hard time playing catch-up. If you bid 1♠ or 1N you'll play it there. Pard bid 2♣ on: xx, 8xxx, J9, KQ987. Over 2♣, I made a Jeff Rubens style 2♥ rebid and pard raised me to game. The play in 4♥ is interesting, but it comes home.
whereagles
Seems like you and pard weren't on the same wavelenght... but all went well in the end :)
han
Yucky auction, but I won't argue with success.
Winstonm
Being that it is matchpoints and the most I can lose is 1 board I will take some kind of action. With my 17 and opener's presumed 12, that leaves 11 for everyone else, or 5.5 each. Most likely a part score battle. I have sympathy for the 1N call but this hand has little in the way of tricks if I can't get to dummy easily. I think I'll take the Michael's call and hope my strength offsets my lack of shape. Hopefully, we'll have some kind of play for 2 or 3 of a major even in a 4/3 fit.
luke warm
The play in 4♥ is interesting, but it comes home. all's well that ends well... question phil, would you have found 4♥ after a 1nt overcall?
pclayton
No way - but we'd find a really good part score.
cf_John0
IMO,Michaels will work well here, although there are only 4-card major.
