Am I crazy?

Oops, I suddenly realize that I've been behaving unethically for a long time.

 

I usually greet a pick-up or indy partner with "Ur card is fine", "SAYC please" before starting to bid. But sometimes it's not possible. For example, partner has "Acol or Precision" on her card and starts bidding before answering my request about what system we play. Then I ask once more before I make my bid.

 

Helene: Precision p. (I open 1♣ alerted as 16+ any).

P: What system p?

Helene: Prec, please. (Partner bids 1NT, I 2♣ alerted as stayman)

P: Power prec/Super prec/Basic prec?

Helene: Basic prec. I filled in our cc please check if you want to adjust anything.

P: Sorry no Englizh

 

Didn't occur to me that this was an ethical issue.

This may help me squeeze the last ounce of life out of this dead horse. Helene presents one extreme wherein there is some needed initial discussion that does not go smoothly. No, I do not call the director or complain to my (long dead) mother. Let me present the opposite extreme. I have Flannery marked on my profile, partner has roman on her's, the default is SAYC. I can now handle 4-5-3-1: 2D, my profile pard, I can handle 4-4-1-4: 2D, your profile pard, and 2-3-6-2: 2D with no comment. Now the Individual rules forbid the 2D Multi, but this isn't what they have in mind. I suppose no one condones this, just as no one objects to initial discussion of whether they are playing 2/1 or SAYC even if the first bid has been made.

 

The situation I described lies between these extremes: 2C-2D-3S-4NT: Opener says to himself, or may have said to himself, "Gee, it would really be a lot easier to decide between small and grand if we were playing RKC. Unfortunately, default is SAYC. Ah, pard's profile says RKC. No problemo. 5D, your profile partner." Discussing the general system as the cards spring up causes me no pain. This does.

Well maybe in INDY tourneys BBO "tournament" settings ( for directors I mean) should have maybe a 1 min at start of each round (Before cards are seen ) where a BASIC system can be agreed ( like for example 'SAYC RKCB [or standard BW] HI or LOW enc ) could be agreed BEFORE any cards are dealt??

 

Same to apply in other tourneys for first round only?

 

But I do agree if there is NO language in common it is a HUGE problem -- to which I have no solution :)
