IMPs (Swiss). Opps are playing SAYC. You've agreed to play UCBs where 2C by North would be 10+ HCPs. No firm agreements on what double would show.

It takes so little from p to make game that bidding less than game seems too cowardly. BUT that is not the only reason to bid game. The opps are big favorites to sac (if they intend to sac) in hearts. I think we would be fairly happy to defend 5h x and bidding 4s will make it tougher for the opps to find any other strain.

You should not stop short of game. It might go down, especially if the A is missing and led followed by another trump, but it's worth the try.

A possible reason to bid 3 is, that you hope to bid 4 over 4 and make them Oppos think, that they pushed you into an infeasible game and let you play there. However, looking at AQxx they're not going to bid 4 very often... I know someone in my club, against whom I might take that approach.

I'm not entirely sure how much I want to involve partner in a possible 5lvl-decision. It's quite unlikely that either opponent bids 5 in the first place and secondly the wasted Q severly lowers my ODR. I have 5 beat in my own hand and partner needs perfect cards for only bidding 2 and 5 being on. Something like KJxx,x,Kxxx, xxxx is no 2-bid for most and if he has that 5 is going to be painful :)

If the Q were a small and in return a small the K, I would strongly consider bidding 4, because now 5 will not nearly be as painful and partner is much more likely to only bid 2 with 5 being on anyway, if he has no -wastage

Fair enough. Partner did bid 4S and I thought it was a bit over-aggressive with a single raise needing to cover a lot of losers. I had 742 T5 KT74 K762 (perhaps I am the one being too aggressive? :)), opener happily socked it with AKJ9 of trumps and we conceded 500. Thankfully, team-mates brought us a lifejacket in the form of 3S-3 so we only lost 5 IMPs.

If you're wondering why there appear to be fourteen hearts in the deck... well, so am I. Apparently opener thought it right to support with three.

Wow. I have to wonder if y'all are playing with Casper Milqetoast.

I bid 3 and may well go down right there opposite MY partners minimum raise (Kxx, x and a stray J is enough for us) but if we can make 4 MY partner knows it's imps and the vul and will always bid it.

Where do I find such a partner who raises to 4 on Kxx/x/Kxxx/xxxx?

BTW if partner has your example minimum 4 may even make.
