inquiry
Welcome to the first Bridge Poll Online contest in the Bridge Base Online Forums. This is how this will work. Below are eight quizzes that are being posed to a panel of experts. The panel includes well know “gold stars” on Bridge Base Online. The panelist are requested to send their answers and “explanations” for their choices to me by private message from this site or they can email me at inquiry at bridgebase dot com. Readers of this forum are invited to submit their choice (no need to explain them at that time) via private message to user Elianna here in this forum. The person submitting to Elianna the answers which earn the highest score will be invited in the next panel!! It could easily be YOU. If there is tie, the person who sends their answers first will be selected to join the panel, so submit your answers as soon as you can. At some time after all the panelist replies are submitted, voting will be stopped and this thread will be unlock to allow regular posters a day or two to post their ideas a out the auctions before I post the panelist votes along with selected excerpts of the logic for their bids. This initial problem set is really just to get the mechanics down: panelist voting, members voting, sharing info between Elianna and I. Also to determine if seven problems (between the high and low suggested by members) is too many or too few. The problems for this poll were selected to based upon a theme (bet you can guess it) to establish the “standard” for future polls. Thus, many of these initial poll questions are routine and there may be little disagreement. But I would not be too surprised if one or more of these “easy” looking questions generated at lot of diversity in answers: sometimes the easiest looking positions generate many different answers. Everyone (panelist, BBF members, and yes, even guest) are invited to submit problems for future contest. Vote now, vote often. Panelist please send me email at inquiry at bridgebase dot com, or private message me here. Everyone else, private message Elianna here with your choices. (To send Elianna your vote, click on this link, and then click on the name ELIANNA then click the line that says "personal message" click here. http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?sho...indpost&p=65113 [hv=d=w&v=a&s=s4hqjt6dkj9865ckq]133|100|Scoring: MPBPO-001-A Note: Some problems will be matchpoint, some will be imps, this is matchpoints. inquiry
Quick note: Panelst, feel free to explain your action (of course), so I can add your comments to the "answers" when posted. Other members, when mailing Elianna, simply state which question (A, B, C, etc), and your bid. There is no reason to explain in your message about your vote why you voted. The job will be hard enough compiling the list the votes without having to search through long post explain why a jump to 7D is the only possible bid and the other bids are hogwash. Finally, for anyone not paying full attention. the bidding system for these question is Bridge Base Online Advanced (posted in another thread in this forum). What is written in that thread (taken directly from the Bridge Base Online - Advanced training material in the "learn Bridge" section of BBO gaming site), is all the instruction about the system provided. You are to use that as the "framework" for these question. No doubt we will be able to expand on that system as time goes on based upon the replies we get to question posed in these polls. inquiry
I invited 14 experts to participate in the poll, all of who readily agreed. Unfortuantely, due to the timing of the poll only 9 found the time to do so. I ams sure we all would like to thank these experts for participanting, and that we look forward to their continued participation in the future. What I have learned from this process is: 1.) I need to give the experts more time to provide their answers. The solution will be I will forward the poll to them a week in advance of posting it here. 2) Users would like sort of rapid feed-back on the voting, so we will have the polls open only for a fairly short time frame. The Friday to Monday concept looks like it is reasonable. We will publish a deadline for votes to be submitted. 3) The problems will then be open up for discussion for a few days before the panel's votes will posted (like this time). I think maybe seven problems is a tad bid long, so we will reduce the total to six for future polls. 4) In the subsequent days prior to the next poll, we will see if we can reach some agreement on what the systemic bid would be in certain circumstances. The debate on that issue will be how to continue over michaels cue-bid clearly from this hand, as well as the meaning of some low level doubles. Below is the panel votes on each of the problem hands in this set. This thread is now also open for discussion, and has been unpinned, and watch for the announcement of who won the bidding First bidding contest. inquiry
Congratulations awm. Also, we should note that Waldkk was the only panelist voting with the majority on each hand, so he scored a perfect "700". I pont this out, in part, because I know he would not call his performance to our attention.

inquiry
wtg adam and roland... have the comments for 'E', 'F', and 'G' been posted yet, i can't find them Well.. it takes me some time to compile the responses, and to post them. I will try to get the rest of them posted today. So I guess these raises the issue, should I wait and post all A-G at once? Or should I post them in order every six hours or so? The slow post allow you to focus on one problem at a time rather than all seven. Ben

I always feel pleasantly surprised when I see that a new one got posted (it's like I found a prize!).

Quite right Ben, but one thing I would like to call your attention to is that my username is actually Walddk  dk for denmark. luke warm
i think the way you're doing it is great, one at a time... but it *might* be better to wait for all to be posted before giving the results... just a suggestion
inquiry
BTW, we had 31 users vote, 2 more voted too late to be counted, 9 panelist, and two adminstrators (me and Elianna), for a total of 44 people participating (and this doesn't count a lot of people who have been reading these threads without participating in the fun of voting). This seems very successful for an initial attempt. How can you help? Send in possible hand. If we use your hand in a contest, we will credit it to you. To send them, just message me. Dwingo
IMHO, 31 people voting is too less. We need to give people more time to vote and also give more publicity. There are many who frequent the Forums, but they may not be doing this on a daily basis. It would be nice if the next bidding poll could be given some free publicity in the BBO news window for the duration of the poll. pclayton
I've played 4 sessions in real life (we won a bracketed KO a few years ago) with Adam and it doesn't surprise me that he did the best. He's representing Los Angeles in the Grand National Teams in the Superflight. He has his work cut out for him in Atlanta but his team will do fine. Good job! And wtg Roland! GodwinI have a suggestion - MAYBE have polls starting on a SPECIFIC day of the week ---- maybe every week --- every second week --- or maybe the first (say Monday) of the month ?? :D Think the idea of posting in news window terrific idea too BUT 31 for first poll not too bad either ;) I really appreciate the work needed to set up this type of "poll" and feel that if it were a regular start time MAYBE more of teh posters in forum might participate (BTW I was ONE of the 2 who sent answers in too late to be counted -- and received a lovely reply from Elainna ;)
Dwingo
If it is not too much work for Elianna, would appreciate if the Names of the Top 10 or Top 10% of Respondents or whatever you decide is published along with their answers. Just a small motivation for more people to participate in these polls. Godwin

(Since there were 31 respondents, that would be three names, and I posted more than that!) I can get the rest of the top 10, but that will have to wait a day, very likely (this a time of transit for me!) I wouldn't go too low on the list. Perhaps those that did poorly don't want to see their names. Pavlicek posts everyone over average, maybe thats an idea. Elianna
In addition to the people that were previously mentioned, those ABOVE (and not equal to) the median* of 540 were: Mike777, Poky, luke warm, Fluffy, Flytox, Cherdano, Echognome, HeartA (in no particular order). *For those who hate math, median is the number that occurred exactly in the middle. So 15 people were above or equal to this score, 15 were below or equal, and one person acheived a score equal to 540 (with an even number of respondents, this would have been SLIGHTLY different interpretation of median). I chose median as the average to use because I like it more than other averaging techniques! :P
