this and that

Thinking about vugraph and my own watching habits - I wondered about a couple of things:

1. Would it be possible or valuable to post brief bios of all the vugraph commentators and operaters on this site in some readily clickable form - when I am watching vugraph I often wonder about the backgrounds of the commentators - it's part of the fun knowing them in a little more detail as they provide their analysis. I was thinking along the lines of their bridge credentials and just a little about them personally like work or any other interesting tidbits - like how many dogs Richie has or how many coks he owes Roland, or where Roland learned to say "Wanna bet?"

2. Similarly a photo gallery of commentators and vugraph operators (both equally important to the event).

As far as commentator biographies are concerned I think they are on Fred's would-be-nice list. At least I know that Fred suggested a while ago that there should be a "commentators on duty" list to click on.

Whether that will be extended to profiles, I don't know, but I am pretty confident that we will see it in the foreseeable future.

Wanna bet? :)

To do something similar with operators is an almost impossible task. We simply don't know who they are until the very last minute, often at the table when I get in touch with one or more of them, or with one of the organisers who happens to be online at the time.

On the other hand, we have a handful of regular operators around the world, and perhaps it would be possible to load their profiles when they are on duty. Patapon, zmud99, marekw, marcin, libido, BoboJ (AL Johnsen), doty, Booze, liraren among others.

No matter what, it will take some effort to get all this compiled, and we need a volunteer for that prupose if it is to go ahead. I've got all the commentator e-mail addresses, but I have plenty to do with coordinating our broadcasts, so I am not a contender.

I know someone who would be very good at it though. Karen Owens, aka macaw, but I haven't talked with her about it, so it's just a suggestion at this point.

Much as described in another thread - vugraph operators profiles might be on 'nice to have' list for organizers - you might be surprised at response. Then of course someone has to work on designing the Team BBO shirts for on-site vugraph personnel - available in Sheri's tuck shop for a verrrrry reasonable price.

Karen (macaw) is working fast. She has already composed a draft for Fred and me to review before we (possibly) send an e-mail to the commentators. Bear in mind that Fred doesn't even know about this yet.

It's before 7 am in LV as I'm writing this post, so we will give him 15 or 20 minutes to get sleep out of his eyes :)

Then of course there is the idea of a set of cheap but tasteful BBO beer mugs to be presented at each vugraph event wind-up banquet to the person or pair who bid or played or defended the best on one hand on vugraph as determined by the commentators. Okay 3 sets of cheap beer mugs. Well I guess if you are out of beer mugs then plastic BBO playing cards. No? Alright a case of coke - now there's a history to that.

In fact Coke might sponsor the BBO awards especially if the operators introduced each new board with something like - " Board 12 of the TASMANIA OPEN TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP - this board eligible for players to win the BBO Vugraph Award for best played - sponsored by Coca Cola

I think Coca-Cola is already sponsoring vugraphs

"I bet a coke...."

Maybe Fred can contact Pepsi to see what they offer if we start betting Pepsis instead :-)

I also think it's easy to install a cheap webcam for vugraph shows, after all who doesn't have or can't borrow a webcam? Then players can get paid to wear hats or t-shirts from sponsor companies and BBO can get paid for broadcasting the live image of the players...
