Who the hell knows. The threshold for jumping to 2S in balancing seat is also way too low IMO, it only shows 13+ total points, so 10 HCP and this shape is enough, like add a Q. Should be more like 17-19 or 16-18 total points IMO.

Possibly, in GIBBO's addled innards, and under the assumption a fit is likely:

1. ak = 12 points

2. stiff heart 4 points

3. 2D 2 points

4. add a point or 2 for J98x

 

so it gets to its 18+ points and there the matter rests.

I can understand an involved competitive auction and consequent mistakes. This is random. How can this bid not be in a bidding look-up table.

All the bids are in a look-up table, or more exactly what is spit out by a virtual flow-chart based on the rules database, hand and auction. The problem is when the table has bad entries (easy to make mistakes, because it's hard to create a table to cover all possible auctions), or it starts mis-thinking based on its perception of how it thinks the future auction will continue.

 

I don't know about the state of the current database, but on my old PC GIB apparently the book bid for whatever reason is 2S, but then it feels maybe it's a bit weak for that, then starts simulating between 1S 2S and dbl, and decides x works out best? Maybe it is thinking you are trapping a lot and have penalty pass and they have nowhere to go? Who knows.

 

So the problem here is mainly IMO:

1. Way too low threshold for 2S to be even considered.

2. Shouldn't be simming vs dbl IMO with 5+ spades in this particular spot. Maybe sim vs. pass with both 5cd spade length, heart length, and min. Some spots we want the bot to sim to basically replace human judgment, mainly in things like whether to accept/issue an invite, pass a takeout double for penalty, etc. But some spots like this are too early in the auction to know what's going to transpire so we want to stick to the book bid.
