pescetom
Most conservative bidding schemes would not allow an earlier spade bid.But piping up with 5hcp is silly and contradicts his own blurb of 8-9 points.
helene_t
I don't see the problem. Favourable vulnerability. 2♠ or 3♣ will be lawful. And it already limited its strength. Maybe 2♣ is a bit old fashioned. In the 21st century we bid 1♠. I don't personally have strong opinions about this as long as I know partner's style. Stephen Tu
I don't mind not bidding 1s on some very weak hands to support clubs instead, but I'd want better clubs than t9 4th to do it. 5+ clubs or maybe 4 clubs with 2 honors. Also they need to tweak some things:1. It requires 8+ total points to make free 1s bid over double but only 6 to raise clubs. 8 seems high, I'd lower it down to at least 7. Passing this hand to me is fine.2. Having given up on showing spades the first time it ought to be consistent by passing later. Delayed 2S might be OK with 5/6 clubs, but then should be weaker, 6-7 total points instead of 8-9, with real hands would always bid spades first. Could be argued that it should only bypass hearts to raise clubs, and never hide spades, given competitive considerations.

jdonn
Sorry I don't consider this one a bug either, just more judgement. And again, I think GIB's judgment was reasonable anyway.
