Agressive bidding sometimes pays?

Recommended Posts

The aggressiveness was meant to belong to South for his "double". He knew that East's response of 1NT showed limited strength; he expected his side could have had up to 17~18 HCPs; and that his holding of KJ3 behind the bidder could be valuable. He could have bidden 2 himself but this was too misleading. Therefore, he just "doubled" and waited for the best.

Unless you got the auction wrong: The double was before opener limited his hand,

and this means, the X is just garbage, unless you tell us, that South was able to look

in the future.

If the auction comes to South a 3rd time, he may enter, but not at his 2nd bid, he got

away with it, fine, this happens, sometimes you have play bad bridge to have a chance to

catch up, but rationlizing / defending bad calls, ...

South was lucky, that East was not able to show his inv. (-) strength, which makes it

hard for West to hit 3H, maybe it was also IMP scoring, ...

The "aggressive" bid happened to work this time. West should recognize that the 3 raise has to be made on length and values.

The choice becomes 3 NT or making an ornery MP double. With the fit, I think a "risky" 3 NT bid stands out at MPs. Based on the bidding, it seems like RHO who doubled is more likely to have A and gives you a probable double stopper.

Even if I took a big goose egg here from these players, I'd love playing against them in the future. If they continue to be aggressive like this, I know I'll get more than my share of +1100s and +800s to offset any bad result this time.

The double is silly. Bid 2, or open 2, if you must.

3 should be doubled and may go for 800 if you have to guess the spades yourself.

Opps may well have stopped in 3 if you didn't bid 3 so you traded -130 for -150 even without the double.

No, no - you have missed the point, helene. South knew that it would be misleading to overcall 2!

Next time, perhaps it will occur to him that it might also be misleading to double....
