By any method of evaluation, the North hand is worth a slam try. Forget about the fact that North has an extra trump. Just count points the idiotic way and give one point for each doubleton.

As an aside question, does GIB play that 2C=2D=2N=3D=3H=4H is some sort of slam try with 6 hearts? If so, under what conditions would it use this approach?

Bidding a slam seems impossible on this hand. You need 33 points for slam, 7 + 24(max) < 33, QED. For some reason, I think you have a better chance of getting to slam if North only had 6 hearts, and zero chance of getting to slam with 8 hearts. With 9 hearts, you will probably end up in 2NT or 3.

I assume you mean that bidding a slam with GIB looks impossible.

I find it hard to imagine a sequence with my partner in N that does not lead to 6 or 6NT.

GIB deducts a point for honours in short suits. So it only counts this as 8 points and thus doesn't continue.

3 then 4 shows "Mild slam try. No shortness - 2+ , 2+ , 6+ , 2+ , 7-8 total points.". Which seems to describe the hand perfectly; not sure why it wouldn't bid this.

As an aside this shows the inferiority of Texas.

South African Transfers is trivial though you might miss others.

.... 2N-4 (shows hearts) 4 good for hearts etc..

Only loss is Gerber no biggie imho.

Texas transfer and then RKC is the standard way to show slam range hands. Texas transfer and then pass shows the game range only hands.

Jacoby transfer and then raise transfer acceptance to game shows a slam invitational hand.
