PASS

IF lho was not a passed hand it might be worthwhile to consider 5c (solely to try and make it tougher on the opps to get to slam) just in case partner has a fit but it is VERY risky. Since lho has already passed the odds of the opps getting to slam border on nonexistent and that means any venture on your part is almost certainly doomed to big numbers vs a max of say -480.

The opponents have AT LEAST 10 spades.

I think this hand really needs to be fed into a simulator to give us a good answer.

Advantagees of 5C are many. Opponents are now left guessing with RKC gone when they are in slam zone. Opponents might bid 5S and go down. Opponents might double and miss slam or not beat me enough.

Tbe disadvantage, and it is a big one, is going down 500+ when the field is -450.

Because matchpoints events favor those who tend to have high variance results, I think this is a great spot to bid 5C, though a simulation could convince me that I am insane.

As for WHY you want variance.... A bunch of 7 out of 12 scores is great for low overalls at best. Mix in some 0's and you are average. Min in a few tops and you are in contention to win. This is far less valuable in a weak field, but in a strong field, creating swings that are at least actions that could be right can mean higher (and lower) scores.

In imps this is even more interesting. -500 is no longer something I am strongly averse to. Am I really going down 3+ a lot? Do I really think we are beating 4S very often? But I love taking away RKC and a 5C cue bid. Pushing them to 5S is worth quite a lot too.

As everyone else said 'Pass' is the only sensible option plus if you do bid the opponents may find that slam that otherwise they would miss. The 4 bidder's partner, who's already passed, doesn't know whether the 4 bid has been made on strength and/or distribution and is hardly going to five level except if you encourage him or her.

4NT, of course, showing both suits.

I hope that 4NT was in jest? The bid is particularly daft:

(1) A 4NT bid does not show both suits in this auction. Many will play the bid as (RKC) Blackwood. A strong case can be made that 4NT should be natural in this auction. No one will play that it shows both unbid suits.

(2) The reason that no one will play that it shows both of the other suits is that you don't want to show both of the other suits opposite any normal 3 opening. On this hand, any five-level contract will be failing against almost any normal 3 opening.

What do you bid ?

I get very jittery when partner opens in my singleton suit.

Anyone who bids on this hand after the auction given has a poorly developed sense of danger. PASS is the only safe option
