Is there a way to bid the grand rationally?

Recommended Posts

Well the easiest way would seem to be:

2 (strong) - 2 (5 spades to two of top 3)

7

This is in fact how most people play the 2 response.

One could also imagine an auction like:

2 - 2

4 (sets the suit) - 4 (cue)

5 (cue) - 5 (nothing much to cuebid)

5 (cue) - 5 (reasonable to cue here I think)

7

Of course there are any number of relay/asking bid based auctions.

:)

Another way. Open 2. Over 2 or (in this case) 2 make a jump rebid of 4. This sets and invites a cue bid. After 4, you have your answer (give or take a potential loser). Still, at matchpoints, you need to ask for aces to investigate the higher scoring 7NT.

There is no sanity clause unless you are of the 2 promises two of the top three honours. Great when it comes up, but it creates a lot of awkward auctions when it distorts natural bidding sequences.

OR, play a strong club system with asking bids.

Anyway to bid the grand?

WOW another one(second in a few days :) ) for the now DEFUNCT Schenken 2(asking for SPECIFIC Aces and if necessary Kings and Queens too ) This will ALWAYS get to correct contract no Matter what P has

If P shows A and A SIMPLE to call for Kings JUST to make sure 7NT COLD

IF P has A AND Q then 7 also there or 0 Aces and as little as Q SIX is cold ( and I don't think MANY other systems can say that 6 is COLD )

Using other systems I'm sure GS can be bid though :)

1-1

5NT-6

7

its a rational way to get to 7, but could be a non rational way to play 6 (specially if partner rectifies 6 for 6 later).

To avoid such difficulties you could:

1-1

2NT*-3

5NT-....

where 2NT is 18-19 bal or any GF hand. And 5NT makes it clear it is an unbalanced hand.

Hi,

the only risk being, that 2NT will be

passed out, unless 2NT is GF, not

a usual treatment, altough I did play

it.

With kind regards

with my f2f partner, it's easy if they don't intervene after our strong 1 opening:

1 - 1 (negative)

1 - 1NT (GF, 4+, can have any other longer suit)

2 - 4 (6-3-0-4)

4 - 5 (4 SlamPoints)

5 - 5 (1/2 tophonours , 0/3 in )

5NT - 6 (0/3 tophonours )

7

Opener bids relays until 7.
