You hold KT7 AJT64 9642 6 in a serious 64-board IMPs match.

The auction starts

(1) 1NT (P) 2

(3) P (P) X

(P) 3 (P) ?

where

1NT = 15-18 BALish, strongly suggests a C stopper

2 = transfer to hearts

X = takeout

(Edited to include hand! The trouble with posting late at night and not checking carefully . . . Further edited to specify IMPs and standard of game and partner.)

3S looks like 4 spades and minimum so I would pass.

The original poster is from Australia. You're not allowed to play a partscore here - the catchphrase is "game on every hand, slam on every other". I think there's even something in the regulations about it ...

Vulnerability ? This has implications as partner could have passed out 3X.

Trying to visualise what shape partner has for not passing out 3X, and not bidding 3red.

Also how would you bid a hand with 5/4 over 1N? as some people DON'T bid 2-2-2 with this.

I think there's a good chance partner has 5 spades but trying to evaluate how good a chance.

This is a very strange auction.Partner overcalled opps 1C with a strong NT .He did not bid 3H over 3C .He took out the doubled 3C contract.He never bid spades at any level earlier.He did not double 3 C immediately to show spade /diamond (4/5) hand.So his very likely hand is 4243 or rather should be.I shall pass since I do not wish to go up one level by bidding 4D.

Absent discussion, that double is penalty

Partner has poor clubs with 4243 or 4234 shape.

Developing hearts may be a problem since we lack the T and have to draw trump. I pass 3S and figure making any number of spades will be a good result. NT rates to play really poorly unless pard has AQJx and KQ in majors.

(or AQxs xnd KQ with spades splitting 3-3)

I pass and expect a good score.

Hi,

Pass is out, ..., 3S should show heart support and spade values.

I voted 4H, but if you play refransfer, than change this to 4C / 4D,

whatever you think the retransfer bid.

On ther other hand 4C / 4D sound like a cues, ..., so for simplicity

I go with 4H.

With kind regards

Marlowe

PS: The X is not take out, but it is also not penalty, ..., it showes

values.

What about Melbourne in England.
