I can hear sirens and men in white coats jumping out of vehicles holding one of those jackets with the extra long arms and buttons up the back

Well, yes, that's what I thought. But of course today is the day you find partner with A109 83 A106 A8432, and furthermore partner's in on the joke and doesn't raise to 6... Opps won a huge swing because team-mates at the other table passed out 4H for -1 (should be -2, but of course they'd already lost).

I'm torn between looking into filing a player memo, attributing it to Mr. Hanlon and his razor, or blaming East at the other table for not doubling 4H (though that's not necessarily clear-cut).

butterfly net carrying peeps aside-- what are we hoping to gain from a 5c bid?

1. Lead direction? nope we are almost surely on opening lead if we do not win the contract.

2. Make? possibly but since we have only 5 sure winners (plus 2 more with a little help) we need help for at least FOUR and maybe five more winners from partner. Is this impossible? no but how will we ever shut partner up short of seven if we bid 5 now?

3. SAC? maybe possible but lets look at the tactics. We rate to have maybe 1 club trick (IF p has the ace).l If p has 2 other tricks for us that puts us at close to ten tricks but we also should have 4/5 defensive tricks so it is mostly phantom.

4. We are trying to get our name in the funny papers? That might work as long as we are willing to gamble -1100 to -1400 in order to achieve such fame (and we wonder why the partnership desk always closes when we get close to it hmmmmmmmmm.

5. MAYBE just maybe (perish the thought) partner might be able to make a reasonable judgement about how to proceed over 4h if we pass since they are looking at their cards and we are not.

Never will I make this bid or not give the slightest thought. If made Ina normal way I shall call it an impetuous bid.Change the hand slightly by adding another club card,Singleton heart and add Ace of spades. making the hand something like AK-x-KQx-.KQJxxxx.Well ! What now.? I shall be very thankful if the experts can provide a simple solution.

If partner has enough for 11 tricks he will bid the slam.

This is exactly what I was envisaging. With three aces and partner bidding freely at the five level, surely most of us would raise to six???

Well, if this hand passes over 5C then the bid has more going for it. Not enough to make it a sensible option, but you have to be impressed with the partnership harmony.

this isn't suspicious. it's just a very bad bid.

as for the other hand, it's not even close to a double of 4h.

Now you've got to be joking about E not being close to a X of 4. In fact, E has an AUTOMATIC X of 4 after which W bids 5 after giving passing though to 6. Bridge is an easy game isn't it.

5C no. I may risk Double, and hope to taken 4 defence trick, but never 5C. if this hand was from 4th level(H vs S) and with even or favorite vul ok.

i mean you have 2 H opponent (most of the time) have 8 H here. so is 50-50 if partener has less than 2 H. (0-3=0-3 1-2=2-1)

we have odds from 5 tricks in Clubs, 13 HCP(15 total?) but NO ACES. in fact we need close to 14 points and fit from partener to taken 5C(29 points total) but in this case most of us bid 6C. in fact pass looks much better here.

EDIT if we 5C and N no double we are "ok" unless if partener bid 6C. if N bouble at least partener never try 6C

These sorts of things happen at bridge. That's what makes it such a great, but sometimes frustrating, game.

Bidding 5C is insane. I think someone above described it as a "New Partner Asking Bid." I concur. If you do bid 5C, I think partner should raise to 6 in a flash even with xx in hearts. How do you have a 5C bid if you are off all four Aces and have two hearts? Possible, I guess, but highly unlikely.

If you pass 4H as you should, I agree that it's a coin flip whether to X with partner's hand. There are huge risks either way. If you don't X, you may find that the hand is like this one. If you do X, however, partner is apt to bid 4S with four of them, and now North may X for a phone number when the opponents weren't making 4H.

I honestly don't know what I'd do with the East hand in balancing seat; what do others think?

Cheers,

mike
