San Francisco February

It's been many years since I was last in SF. So many that any restaurant I might remember probably isn't there any more. I think though, that the Buena Vista Cafe is still there, near Pier 39 I think, and a block or so from Ghirardelli Square, at the end of a trolley run. If so, you should stop in and have an Irish Coffee. :-)

I liked the boat trip to Alcatraz and the many science centre, such as the Exploratorium. They make better museums and art galleries than we are used to in Europe, IMO.

SF is a stressful city, though, with ethnic tensions felt everywhere. I liked San Jose a lot better. But there is less to do there.

My favorite city.

Most of it's very walkable, so walk it. Go down Market all the way to the Castro - swing by Dolores Park and back up through Mission District. If your feet hurt, you can chicken out and take the BART.

On a 2nd day, rent a bike and go across the bridge to Sausalito, have lunch and take the ferry back. Hike up to Coit tower. Make sure you go by the Palace of Fine Arts.

If you want to head to Haight and Golden Gate park you might want to get an rideshare to get out there.

Don't try to cover too much in one day.

For restaurants - my favorite places are Scoma's near Pier 39 and Tony's Pizza in Little Italy. Farallon near Union Square is exceptional. Been to many pubs - I usually get a Guinness at Foley's.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We made a list based on pretty much this thread alone. We are flying in 2 days. Just in case anyone wants to meet up (we're there until the Sunday after the coming one), contact me via PM.

I'm a vegetarian, so they made me some pasta. The rest had the Petrale Dore, they liked it. My boss paid the starters, great stuff!

Today, we did the biking thing, biked to Sausalito, took the ferry back, and then we biked up to Twin Peaks. Missed the sunset but was still great.
