Mobile app 5.0 feedback thread

I would guess the majority of apps these days can switch to landscape mode. You can change your device settings to turn off auto rotate if you don't like landscape although that usually applies to all apps. There are apps which can control which specific apps can be rotated.

The good: I am startled how much faster the game is with the new version (iOS 11 on a few year old iPad); the new code is much more responsive. The display errors I used to see with the old version are not there so far.

The bad: To elaborate on the scoring history, I played in an individual tournament this morning, so I bounced around in both directions. Unfortunately, the scores as the tournament went on were listed as N/S and E/W, so I had to recall which direction I was sitting to interpret the score for each board. I can do that, but should I have to?

The odd: on a couple of hands this morning, the dealer was not indicated in the board number display until the dealer bid. I used to know who dealt based on the board number, when I played more live bridge, but I guess BBO has spoiled me into not remembering that any more.

More good: convention cards. I like how you decided to display them given the limitations of the mobile device screen.

If coding issues forced the takeaway of landscape mode, I can get that, but maybe it would have been better to say that up front; I think I saw that in this comment thread. It did seem odd that I had to flip my screen when I clicked on the comment thread in the app to read and add to this thread.

Testing internally is not the same as asking users to beta test new apps. Designers often miss things--like the lack of landscape mode here--that impact users immensely.

We didn't miss it. We knew full well that it wasn't there. We felt it wasn't a show-stopper that we needed to hold up the release for.

I’m shocked that there is no landscape mode on the new iOS app.

Is this a joke update? Now I can’t play on my elliptical nor anytime I need to use landscape mode, which I prefer all the time!

I totally agree with Dan. iPad for BBO much better in landscape mode as that is how the iPad sits on it’s support stand or keyboard cover when using it. It is a pain to hold the iPad in portrait mode while playing. I am going back to using BBO on my PC, sadly

If you have a laptop you can use the web version.

Yes, that's true. But it's a big step backward. My husband and I love to watch the vugraph together, on our big screen TV, mirroring our iPad thru our Apple TV box. It will uncomfortable for us to watch together on a laptop. To me, maybe not to the majority, this is harder to work-around than the portrait mode. Please Fred.

The new app is a big drawback imo. I play daily in the tourney mode.

Many functions of the old app, too many to mention, simply disappeared, also there is no personal score anymore,

Also very disturbing is that listening to music or the radio while playing bridge has been made impossible because at every new board there is a crack and the player is halted by the BBO software.

To state this new app has been tested thoroughly is a joke imo.

Holland,

What do you mean? I haven’t tried music whilst on the new app yet. That sounds bad.

I live in Holland, my name is Onno btw

Thats exactly what I mean. You are not able to use a music player or listen to the radio while using this app.
