Playing Sayc, you are fourth to speak, holding:

S: AXX

H: AXXX

D: AXXX

C: AX

Having read Reese's book, you opened 1d, bearing in mind pd may respond NT, which you will be happy to hear. However, pd bid 1s, what do you bid now?

pass-pass-pass-1D

pass-1S- pass-?

Oh dear. You should:

1) Curse yourself for not opening 1NT, and

2) Bid 1NT, except,

3) I just started a thread on raising partner with 3. Would anyone raise to 2S on this? Of course, 2S shows a minimum opener, too ???

I will reverse with two four card suits, but not on this hand (give me a queen).

Yes, I think I shouldl open 1N, but i remember I read Reese mentioned this kind hand somewhere, not very sure though.

I raised to 2s, hoping pd will take further action, but pd passed. His hand is:

S: KJTXX

H: XX

D: XX

C: KXXX

4S has quite good chance.

The important question is why did you NOT open 1NT to begin with?

Having started with a lie, you now need to figure out how to best misrepresent your hand.

if your judgement is that this hand is too strong for a 15-17 NT, then you have no choice but to bid 2NT

If, on the other hand, you think that the hand is too weak for 1NT, then you have a choice between 1NT and 2S.

Lesson one of NT bidding school:

4 Ace hand is NOT a 1NT opener. You have absolutely no spots to support(assuming all those x's are small ones), no suit to run. All you have are 4 bare Aces which are suitable for suit contracts.

And this is exactly the same reason why some 5-card major hands should not be opened with 1NT, such as

AKxxx

Axx

Axx

xx

Yes you still have problems of rebidding after partner responds 1S, but that's not the reason you have to open 1NT. I think either you reverse 2H, or jump to 3S with 3-cd support(yes you could be playing Moysian fit but no solution is perfect).

BTW, did Reese also say that you should add a point with a 4 Ace hand? :-)

2N is not my favorite, I did consider 3S, finally gave up, hoping pd will try sth then I will go to game. Not sure if Reese said we can add 1 point here, but i think it deosnt matter much. THe reason we dont want to open 1N is we dont want this hand to be declarer. Believing this is correct, i think spt pd's S is correct. I do have ruffing vallue. As for 2H, I dont like it. It is really off shape bid. Next round you will spt S, right? Then pd will imagine ur hand being 5431. Not very good.
