  1. 1. What Bid Would You Make?

MPs. With an intermediate partner. Before playing you've agreed that any pre-empts (weak 2s or 3s) must include 3 of the top 5 honours. No Drury or similar. Opponents are vulnerable, you're not. Partner deals and passes, as does RHO: what do you bid?

1 seems to be the best option. Why would you ever consider passing this hand? It's 20/20 deal at best, moreover opponents probably have strength advantage. We have great shape and our partner is a passed hand. If we pass our partner won't start the bidding either and we will never make a sound during the bidding. If our LHO has like 18 HCP and RHO is 9-10 HCP it would be much harder for them to bid to the right contract with our interference.

Assuming you open 1 on this hand, what would be your next action(if any) if partner

responds 2? In answer to the lead post,I would pass this hand and await developments.

Weak 2 certainly is attractive at this vuln, 3rd hand, MP --- lets opps guess instead.....

Immediately tells pd we are going nowhere unless support.

Opening 1 and getting 2 from pd may be problematic as others pointed out.

3/5 top-honours seems particularly silly in 3rd hand...

Depends on methods, 2 barely exists for us and where it does, partner will have at least 2 hearts so I can bid 2 quite happily.

If I'm planning on running away after the first bad result, I guess 1H kind of makes sense, but opening 9HCP with an intermediate partner is not going to be good for the partnership. Besides, light openings are supposed to be able to pass any response, and this does not qualify. 1H is a semi-psyche.

I don't think it's a LIGHT opener. It's 5-5 with a void. Hell, this is a 1st seat opener for me playing with anyone under the age of 80.

1Heart.I do want my partner to lead Hearts if LHO declares in NT.

If my partner bids 2 Diamonds,I shall rebid 2 Heart, If RHO passes or doubles.( penalty).I shall bid an easy 2/3 club if LHO bids1Spade or 2 Diamonds and partner doubles( negative).

Doesn't a rebid of 2 promise a 6+ suit(?) I only see 5 :(

I'd expect a lot of people who play 5 card majors and Drury to open 1 on this hand in 3rd seat.

Personally, I'd either pass or bid 2 on this hand in 3rd seat despite the top 3 0f 5 agreement. While I can understand such an agreement in 1st or 2nd seat, but in 3rd seat you need a little more freedom to obstruct the opponents.

With the intermediate partner described, I'd pass for sure. Over a non-forcing 2 response things could get ugly. Sometimes it's better to just avoid stepping into it.
