Rubber bridge from a few nights ago. Plan the play. West's 2NT is unusual (minors).

West leads K, East contributing the 3 (standard) If you decide to duck, West switches to 10

N.B. After I withdrew the solution after wank's analysis, I noticed something that changes the dynamics of the hand. On the first trump lead from either hand, East plays the 5.

Possible line:

Try to elope with your small trumps.

For example...

Duck K.

Win switch with K.

Cash AK, A

Cross to A and ruff a

Cross to A and ruff a

Ruff a and ruff a

Concede the last 2 tricks.

You really think E doubles on a pile like that ?

I do know the first heart I lead will be the 8 from dummy just to try to catch E covering from J109x or QJ10x

If RHO has 4s, then declarer is likely to succeed, whether or not RHO plays an honour.

If RHO has Q J T 9 5 and covers the 8 from dummy then the defence should prevail.

Hence, if you're confident that RHO has 5s for his double, then your best chance is to lead a small from dummy, in the hope that RHO plays a careless 5.

IMO LHO's vulnerable 2N overcall is braver than RHO's double with good major holdings.[/hv][hv=pc=n&w=ST4HDKJT874CKQT75&s=s73hak732dq62ca84&n=sak652h864da53c92&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=1sp2h2n3hp4hppdppp&p=CKC2C3C4]300|300|

I may be wrong, but even GIB would play a high heart from QJ1095 on a low heart from dummy.

GIB cannot make deceptive plays on purpose. As playing low cannot gain in double dummy play, GIB won't do it.

I see a double dummy declarer line for down 1:

duck first club, win spade, ruff club, duck heart. Now, W is endplayed. a diamond goes to the Q. a club is ruffed in dummy, with a diamond discard. It doesn't matter if E overruffs -- that costs the defense a trump trick.

But, you're going to lose 2 trumps, a diamond, and a club.

You can make with horrible defense:

W returns a club, ruffed in dummy and E discards a spade. Now, cash 2nd S, ruff S, D to A, ruff 2nd spade. Cash two high trumps. E is left with two high trumps when declarer has a diamond and small trump left. Otherwise, if W returns a diamond or E overruffs or discards a diamond on W's club, it's down 1.

But why would you do this as the contract is cold on this layout.

Win the spade

trump to A

Spade to K

spade ruff

A clubs

club ruff

spade ruff

diamond to ace

spade ruff with a top heart to come

GIB makes plenty of plays that can't be right when analyzed double dummy, in addition to making plenty of plays that can never be right unless tossing random cards is the standard of play.
