An Insult??

Playing in a recent pair event at a regional tournament, I believe I was insulted by my partner on this hand.

I held

S – A4

H – K6

D – JT98

C – 87432

I was West, all VUL, with East Dealer and the auction went:

East South West North

PASS PASS PASS 1 CLUB

PASS 2 SPADES  ALL PASS

2 spades was explained as a near opening hand and a good suit(probably 6)

I led the Diamond J and saw this dummy

S – J

H – QT5

D – K 4

C – AKJ95

Declarer played the Diamond K and partner won the Ave. She returned the Diamond 2, which I won with the 9. I shifted to the Club 8 and partner trumped when declarer played low from dummy. Partner returned the Heart 4 and I won when declarer played low. I now exited with my last heart and declarer won the Ace in hand, continuing with a low spade. I won the Ace and now led the Club 7 for partner to ruff. Partner now insulted me by playing the Diamond Q. Declarer trumped and claimed for down 1. When I asked partner why she didn’t give me a heart ruff, she replied that she didn’t think I had another trump on the bidding. Am I wrong to be insulted?

Very amusing Lenze. With my regulat pd I would definitely feel insulted.

Reminds me of -

Two weeks ago playing against a very strong player who knows you

They bid to 6C and you hold

Axx

xxx

xxx

J9xx

You lead the A of S an switch to a H, dummy:

Kx

AKQxx

xx

AQ8x

declarer wins this in hand with the J, leads a trump to the Q - you play the 9 of course, and he now cashes A of C. I was insulted. (Pleased, but insulted).

Hi Ron,

maybe your reputation as a man of honour, truth and honesty is just bigger then your reputation for your card playing skills....

Some years ago, my pd came into an auction with a weak two in Hearts and led the 2 of Hearts to my winning jack.

Oh wonderful surprise, my jack wins, ha great idea!

Okay, so we have heart honours, so I returned a heart...

My pd moved to Cologne and refused to play with me again. :D

Surely, he still waits for the club ruff to come.....

Kind Regards

Roland

P.S. How can my pds insult me by refusing to give me a ruff? This is cleary their mistake.

I won't even attempt to answer your question on its bridge merits, but I have one of my own:

"Partner now insulted me by playing the Diamond Q."

Assuming that it was a foreseeably bad play not to give you a ruff, why would you consider this an insult, and not a mistake?

The insult is not the playing of the Diamond Q. The insult is in the explaination. I have craftily engineered my heart ruff, but partner does not give it to me because she "doesn't think I can have another trump" She has believed the opponents and surely thinks I am an idiot to try for a ruff with the Stiff Ace of trumps
