Awkward. You want to raise clubs without inviting 3NT, and I don't know of a way to do that.

So I suppose I have to pass.

I think the key question is whether or not opener would raise spades with 3. The only realistic risk to passing 2C is that we might miss a spade game. Even with 3 spades, making game is problematic so....

I pass.

Pass

Partner has no more than 4 cards in the pointed suits, so a rebid with such a bad suit has some peril. It would be even more risky if you play Flannery where a 1 response usually shows 5 and opener can raise with 3.

The hand just isn't good enough to raise . If you do, you may get too high if partner takes another bid.

In an IMP sense, if a part score and part score make, 2 is not likely to lose many IMPs.

So, the only big risk for passing 2 [clubs ]is that partner has a big hand and some game makes. Since that isn't all that probable, passing seems best.

3c for several reasons

1. I have no fear of 3n since a bid 4c lets p know my original raise was from a weak and distributional hand.

2. 3c makes it a TON harder for the opps to find their probable diamond fit.

3. This hand has a LOT of playing potential compared to say xxxx xx AJx xxxx

4. There are still a LOT of hands where 5c or even more is a great resting spot and that huge vul game bonus (i've gone down in many partials searching for that elusive vul game bonus perhaps the next 1000 years will bring me more luck).

5. Opener might be bidding cautiously due to spade shortness and rightfully thinking we might have wasted values there.

6. On the off chance opener has 3505 distribution would not a 3s (over 3c) bid almost force responder to grin before placing the 4s card on the table?

7. Passing 2c will rarely reap any benefits but getting to a making (vul) game can put tremendous pressure on the opps.

2/1, IMP pairs.[/hv]

I rank

  1. 2 = NAT. Other games are unlikely. But there remains a slim hope of game in s.
  2. Pass = NAT. In pursuit of the plus-score. Other actions are likely to earn a minus-score. Partner's 2 is a welcome reprieve.
  3. 3 = NAT. Game in s/NT is too far away. But you give partner the opportunity to show delayed support.
