Almost too fantastic for words Boris

Recommended Posts

Boris and friend at the pool table.

Boris: “You know wouldn’t it be fantastic if we didn’t need to remember all those conventions and follow-ups after a 1 no trump opening bid”

Friend: “Fantastic”.

Boris with eyes getting wider: “If we abolished 1 no trump opening bids, then we wouldn’t need to remember all those transfers, junk Stayman, crawling Stayman, minor suit Stayman, Smolen, super accepts. And how to deal with doubles and overcalls Landy, multi-Landy, Astro, Asptro, Meckwell.

All we need to do is to make a 1 no trump rebid = 12-16 and then 2♣ Crowhurst (or 2-way check back if you like) sorts out the shape and strength. So, we never have to open 1 no trump.”

Friend: “Almost too fantastic for words Boris”

Then they dance a jig with the Go Compare man.

Heh. One of the chapters in one of Rosenkranz' books on Romex is titled "How to survive without the strong notrump — or indeed any natural NT at all". In Romex a 1NT rebid is indeed 12-16, and two-way checkback sorts it out. Works quite well, actually.

BTW, the "Dynamic Notrump" 1NT opening in Romex shows either an unbalanced hand with about 18-21 points and 4 or 5 losers, or a balanced 19-20 with 6 controls.
