new obligatory format for BBO

Recommended Posts

I was forced to accept the new format.

I prefer the old, not just because I'm used to it.

I speak several languages and prefer to sit at a table with people who speak one of my known languages (English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian and Danish), because I like to chat with fellow players in between hands.

When looking for an available seat I can no longer see the profiles of the other players, especially FLAG, so I'll know what language) and playing level (so the discrepancy in level isn't too great).

Can't the Flags and playing levels be reinstated, please!!

Hi,

Click a username to see profile. Flags and levels and all the usual info are there, the only thing different is that you have to click instead of mouse-over.

You can also try Casual > List Interesting Tables. This will show you a selection of tables that you might like to play at, already filtered by country, language, skill level.

In my opinion the new FORCED playing platform is a disaster compared to the old reliable one! I feel set back to Yahoo Bridge...

Just a few issues very badly misimproved

Slow and clumsy, you dont see kibitzers any more, it does not remember ID and password, you have to activate your preferences anew each time you visit, chat is a problem because not always reliable, no random access to table - and many others!

Why switch off a good piece of software (old system) with no need or any special campaign coming from users.

As for me, I am extremely disappointed.

I don't experience some of the downsides that you mention. I can see kibitzers. On my machine it does remember my ID and password, and it remembers my preferences.

Chat I agree has scope for improvement, and maybe we shall never restore the ability to log it locally.

Not sure what you mean by random access to table.

But I can see how you would be disappointed if these features do not work for you.

Perhaps you need to spend a bit of time actually using the new software because

1. It will save user names and passwords

2. It does show kibitzers

In answer to your question about why switch off old software

1. Maintaining two redundant code bases is enormously expensive

2. No one in their right mind should be running random executables that they download from the Internet

This sounds like a problem with your Flash settings. Right-click in the BBO window and select Settings.... Go to the Local Storage tab (the folder icon) and click on Allow to allow www.bridgebase.com to save its settings.

  • 2 weeks later...

The switches you suggest for having preferences kept and other facilities means, that you have to open blindage of the system against threats! No way! I am not keen on getting infected only because the new platform relies heavily on Adobe Flash technology which is an invitation for malware and very much obsolete.

I cant see no enhancement in this change from an old reliable platform with only a few limitations to something that might become a fatal hole in the firewall.

incredibly bad solution!

You're only opening it up for our site, which I hope you trust or you wouldn't be running our software. The Windows version that you miss was a much bigger security threat, since it could access any of your files.

You are not convincing at all. There never happened any intrusion while running the old system.

Besides, it is not my private wisdom that Adobe Flash technology is unsafe! Plenty of specialists on the net are all the time warning you. So why build the new platform on a risky, threatening software?

Allowing the website of BBO does not solve the problem. Up to date and secure browsers like my Firefox will just not remember it and dissuades any kind of exeptional add ons. I tried access with IE and there you get Advertising from the start. Was that your real intention in changing the platform? I understand that you might have a problem in running the service for nothing, but then tell users that reason first.

Kind regards.

Of course there was. It saved your settings in a file on your computer. You just never had to do anything to enable it, because normal applications are allowed to do this automatically. Web applications like Flash give you the option of disabling local storage, and you did this.

You can enable or disable this on a site-by-site basis. So you can leave it blocked in general, but enable it for bridgebase.com. Flash Local Storage is similar to browser cookies, which many sites (including ours) require you to enable for settings to persist.

One of the complaints people have about the new version is it doesn't have a way to save all hands or chat to your computer. This is because of the built-in restrictions of Flash applications. They're not able to write to files without the user going through a file-save dialog.

We're working on the next version, which will replace Flash with HTML5+Javascript. It saves all your settings in cookies.

The problem with CLicking rather than Mousing over is its slower, and then you have to click on the X to close the box.

I'd much prefer being able to mouse over rather than clicking.

I too am disappointed with the new software. You can see who is kipping my clicking on one of the tabs to the far right, then clicking on Kibitzers. Buts its far less convenient than the old way.

Warning! Kibitzers doesn't autorefresh. So if you click on the appropriate tab on the far right and it's already on Kibitzers, you have to click one of the other options and return to it.

When the kib tab is open it is sufficient to click the tab again to refresh it. It is not necessary to go to one of the other options before.

I wasn't aware of that, thank you for letting me know.

Thats still a little annoying because you have to remember to do that.

I'd prefer that it auto refresh.

In fact I'd prefer that from the main screen you could mouse over a corner and see who is kibitzing.

Yes given that it does not autorefresh it would have been kinder to give us a manual refresh button. Just one click, plus acts as reminder of the necessity

Or better yet, auto refresh itself, say every 5 seconds.

No you don't. It will go away automatically in 6 seconds, unless you move the mouse over it. Then it will go away when you mouse out. You can use the X to close it sooner.

6 seconds is too long, esp[ecially if several people want to sit at your table and you have to look at each profile and then X it out.

It's rather annoying. It adds extra time so that by the time I get to the third player they may have left.

End of the world no. But pretty annoying.

Suggestion - let it be a user definable parameter, with 6 seconds as the default, but it could be reduced to 0.

And please, please add an option that the host can set that allows the dummy player to view the opponents hands during play.

That's a real killer for me.

I want to watch how they play.

Without it, I go web surfing and may miss when it's my turn to bid. The old software had a much better chime when it was time to bid.

This is the biggest negative of the new BBO software, to the point that I'd play elsewhere if there was a reasonable alternative.
