Please explain the IMPS

Not sure that I quite follow the question.

 

If you bid (say) 3S and make an overtrick, you would expect to lose points if other tables with the same hand bid to 4S and made the same tricks, plus game bonus that you did not contract for at your table. Is that what you meant?

When I kibitz I notice that a winning team with over tricks even can end up with less IMPS than they had before the hand was played. How does this work? Thanks

IMPs are calculated by comparing your score with other tables that played the same board. If you get 1 overtrick, but most other pairs got 2 overtricks, you'll get negative IMPs. Or if you're in a partial, while other pairs bid and made game, you'll get negative IMPs because you don't get the game bonus.
